Is Derive (6.1) currently available for download and use on MS Windows XP?
Thank you.
Google "derive 6 download" (without the quotes). Presumably all
download offers are time-limited trial versions (vbox protected). As
far as I know Texas Instruments acquired the company in 1999 and
stopped selling Derive around 2007.
On the subject of Derive, I just sent this to ti-ca... at (no spam) ti.com. I will
post a reply if I get one.

I see that TI are no longer going to sell Derive, the maths package. Is
there any chance you would release the source code under the GPL 2 or
similar license? (I say GPL 2, rather than GPL 3, since the program that
could most benefit from Derive, which is Sage, is staying GPL 2 and not
GPL 3. In any case, if released under GPL 2, anyone can use it in GPL 3
programs, but the reverse is not true).

Thank you,

In that case I can understand them not wishing to release the code.

I would have thought there were places for both the handheld and PC
based software, so I'm a little suprised TI dropped it. Of course I am
aware of Mathematica, but that is in a different league to derive, which
I think was a lot cheaper.

I have written some code which allows Mathematica to be used on a handheld

Here's a screenshot on a PDA

(more details at http://witm.sourceforge.net/ )

The problem with that handheld solution is that you need WiFi access to
a Unix or Linux Mathematica kernel, which is not as practical as a
self-contained handheld unit.

Sage

http://www.sagemath.org/

is a pretty decent maths package which is free, but I suspect it could
benefit from some ideas from Derive.

If TI don't want to release the source code, how about making the binary
freeware, so anyone can use Derive for free?

Personally, I would not make use of a binary, as I don't use Microsoft
Windows any more than I have to. But I believe others would make use of
it, and if nothing else it would keep the prices of Mathematica and
Maple in check.

It would seem a shame to let a program stagnate if a decision has been
made not to sell it.

I expect their reply will be "we won't be releasing either the source

I am not sure if their NSpire software for PCs is already available,
and at what price. Earlier this year I tried to locate reviews, but
couldn't find any concise description of its capabilities, nor an
assessment of its reliability, either in absolute terms or relative to
Derive (for instance, is it intended to be an upgrade or a
downgrade?).

An introduction to the NSpire software seems to exist, however, at

but I was too lazy to download this 3 MByte document in order to
satisfy my curiosity.

Martin.
