Hi all,

I am new to image processing . i have two images taken with different
white balance adjustments.
i need to compare this and say which one has more white balance . Can
anybody tell me how can I do this. I am trying out this with Matrox
image processing library and AForge.Net.

Thanks in advance

Don't understand.  I understand what white
balance is.  I don't understand what you
mean by "more white balance".  I don't see
how white balance can be something you can
have more of.

Hi,

Sorry for not being clear in query.
I have taken two images with web cam by white balance adjustments ( I
guess i should be saying correcting white balance ) . I need to
compare the two images. Please tell me how can i compare these two
images.
Thanks

Compare for what purpose?  What is your
goal?  Why do you want to do this?

Also, stuffing the two images on a website
somewhere and posting the link is always
helpful.

There are many ways to compare two images.
For example, you can just look at them.

Hi,

Thank you for the response. I have uploaded the images in the below
link.
http://groups.google.com/group/aforge/web/WB-Levels-BeforeAfter.jpeg
I have to compare the images and output the result as which of the
images
has the correct white balance. In the pictures in the above link we
can see the
second image looks more natural. Ofcourse manually we can see both
images
and say which of them is better. Similarly i compare the luminosity of
the two images
and say which one is brighter picture. Hope this is clear.

Thanks

Rajani:
Why don't you just convert both images to CIELAB color space (just use
the "book" formula if you don't have a way to calibrate the images,
such as a Macbeth chart), and then calculate a "Delta E" image.
(Without calibration, you'll just get arbitrary, uncalibrated numbers
but still useful for comparison.) You might want to constrain your
analysis to the "white" area, such as the wall. Then you could look
at a histogram of the Delta E image or even boil it down into a single
"average Delta E" for the whole region. Delta E is the color
difference (look it up). It takes into account differences in
Lightness, Chroma (Saturation), and Hue, all boiled down into one
simple, easy to digest number. Of course you could also look at the
individual delta L, delta C, delta H if you want more detail. You
also might try asking in sci.engr.color.

You can't determine which image has the correct white balance unless
you know the spectral response (i.e. color) of the objects in the
image. To say "manually we can see both images and say which of them
is better," assumes that you know a priori the color of the wall. If
the wall is painted a yellowish off-white, then the image on the left
is correct; if the wall is painted white, then the image on the right
is correct; if the wall is painted pink, then neither is correct.

Ed, you're correct and I think he knows it so that's why he amended
his post to just wanting some way to compare the two images. That's
why I suggested Delta E. It won't be calibrated but I think he's just
looking for something quick and dirty.

Hi ImageAnalyst ,

I have got CIELAB colorspace Delta E .
since i got to know that delta E is a mere number how will I conclude
which image is lighter in the perspective of white balacne. ( I saw
that delta E = Sqare root of the color differences of L A B ). I am
very sorry if I am askig a basic stuff.

Thanks a ton,

Rajani:
If all you want is which one is lighter, or if you want to know that
in addition to the magnitude of the color difference, then look at the
L value. If you want to know which one is more neutral colored, then
look at the chroma (saturation) value, which is the square root of a
squared plus b squared.
