I stopped at the nearby Valero station to put some gas in Blue Satyr
and noticed a sign over the screens where the pump showed the total
cost and pumped gallons. In big black letters, I saw HELP! When I
looked around, other pumps showed YIKES! and OUCH! Looking closer, I
noticed these signs were sponsored by the local Toyota dealership
where I got my little one.
With the cost for gas at $3.41 a gallon, at least for today until the
cost goes up again tomorrow, those signs seemed very appropriate. Is
this about the price you're paying now? At least Blue Satyr now has a
full belly, I mean tank.

((Wow, our regular is up to 4.19 a gallon where are you? It is going
up like
crazy around here. On the islands it is 4.59 for regular. ))
Susan, I'm about 50 miles north of San Francisco. The jump in the cost
of oil last Friday probably means the price of gas will be going up
tomorrow. I figured I'd better fill up since every time I wait the
cost jumps at least a few cents.
By the way, the Valero station near my home is cheap compared to what
some of the other stations charge. Rotten Robbie in town is about 10
cents higher. I even saw one in Cotati near the freeway yesterday
that was $4.59 a gallon.
I am so glad every day I got the Toyota Yaris and no longer have to
use 89 octane like I did in my older car.

They now have AMX cards that are no fee. I just saw a thing online
about best cards and there is one from American Express called Blue Cash
(or Cash Blue). It gives 5% rebates. There is no monthly fee, and you
can pay full balance or over time. I'm definitely going to see what DH
thinks about this, as we put a lot of stuff on one CC already and pay it
monthly so I am pretty sure we'd manage the 6500 required spending. I
called AMX to ask about the rebate. It is applied to your card yearly.
*Reward Basics:
*5% cash back at supermarkets, gas stations and drugstores; 1.5%
elsewhere
*Drawbacks:*
You have to spend $6,500 annually to get 5% and 1.5% back; if you spend
less, it's 1% and 0.5%

The trouble around here is that very few places take AMX! It's Visa, MC, or
Discover, and a few don't take Discover.

Barb, would it be cheaper to get a simple fan to have on next to your
work area instead? I remember a CSI episode where someone put together
what is called a swamp cooler. That's a pan of ice in front of the fan
creating an even cooler breeze. These sound much less expensive than
an A/C unit.
That's just a thought from one who dislikes air conditioning. My home
doesn't have A/C, although Blue Satyr came with one. I admit I have
used it but always with the window open to get fresh air into my
lungs.

Everyone, you might want to monitor your credit score when getting
those store credit cards.
I've heard experts say these can cause that number to go lower. As you
know, that number is tied into interest rates and the ability to get
loans. Just a thought!

Yes, very true about a lot of places not taking AMX, including the place
we eat a lot. What we have now isn't bad at 3% on anything at Exxon or
Mobil and 1% elsewhere. I think DH said we wind up with 30 or 40 bucks
in rebates a month applied directly to the statement. But, it sure is
worth looking around now and then to see what else might be available.
I have a couple of other cards for the deals they offer. One is LL
Bean. They are terminating the agreement with their current bank and
changing to another. If you have an LL Bean Visa you get free shipping
and free monograming all the time. Their new card will also offer free
return shipping. Heck, I can just order a bunch of stuff, try it on, and
send it back - cheaper than driving over to Freeport. Then you get some
points with use - not a high percentage I don't think, but they issue
coupons to use against purchases when you have earned them. Just the
free shipping and return add up to quite a bit - more than points
really, considering it would usually be a minimum of 7 or 8 bucks for
shipping.

<<< My bill for May was almost $550, and I know June, July, and August
are going to go well over $600. >>
Wow, that's a killer! Don't know where you are Barb, but I'm in "Baja
Arizona," Tucson actually. I have central air, but swamp/evaporative
coolers are very efficient here because of low humidity - yesterday the
low humidity was 7% with a high of 24%. Had a large unit installed on
the roof last year. Never once had to run the A/C, and my electric bill
averaged $150+ a month less last summer.

and I about swallowed my tongue at a 272 dollar bill!! We did figure
something out that was "missed" during the construction and the next month
our electric bill dropped down nearly 80 bucks. We have high humidity here
and it's been VERY HOT but even in our old house, keeping both upstairs and
downstairs units set at 72 degrees and upstairs one at 68 at night our
electric bill has NEVER been that high. |

I already have a ceiling fan in the room (we have ceiling fans in nearly
every room--use them instead of a/c when possible) and I have an exhaust fan
in my office near the ceiling which I can turn on which takes the hot air
out and brings in the cooler air from the other rooms. We also have
switched all the lighting to the fluorescent bulbs, and that did help. But,
I can just see the mess if clumsy me or one of the dogs--who insist on being
in the same room I am in--tipping over the swamp cooler.
In the winter we open just about all the doors and windows and enjoy the
fresh air. It's the dry season, so rain is not usually a problem. In the
summer, however, it rains nearly every afternoon and mildew is a problem if
you don't run the a/c. Swamp cooler would add to that. Probably solar
panels to make electricity would be the best because it is a rare day we
don't have a lot of sun--even in the rainy season. We priced a system that
would supply a good portion of our electricity--that was glued down to the
roof and supposed to be hurricane proof, and the cost was about $50,000.
They say payback time would be about 8 years. But, I don't have $50,000
hanging around. We did have solar panels that helped with hot water and
heating to pool in winter, but Hurricane Andrew demolished them. These new
ones are supposed to stand up to the hurricanes. The gate to our property
is operated by a solar panel. It's a good area for solar energy, but the
initial cost is prohibitive for most people. Now, if only I could win the
lottery that I never buy a ticket for!

If we don't use a/c we have mildew problems in the summer. We keep the
thermostat at 78. We could live with 80 if my office didn't get so hot. We
would freeze at 72! We're south of Miami. We don't get as high
temperatures as many places--sometimes my daughter in NJ has it hotter than
we do. Living on a big peninsula the surrounding water keeps the air
cooler. It is not as hot here as people think. But, we do have humidity!
And summer is "rainy season" so you wouldn't want to live here without a/c.

We have been told by someone who sells gas that it all comes from the same
place, at least down here. It comes in by ship to the Port of Miami. The
delivery trucks fill up and there is a list of stations, and the ones that
are the lowest are supplied first, and it doesn't matter what brand the
station is that sells it. If that is true, and I have no reason to doubt
this person, it does no good to refuse to support any of the stations. Many
are individually owned or managed so boycotting them is really hurting the
local owners or employees more than Chavez or whomever is being targeted.
We buy our gas at BJ's and there is no "brand" but they are usually 3 to 5
cents cheaper than most of the stations in the area, sometimes more or less,
but usually a little savings.
