Another fine batch of silkie chicks are popping out all over the tray in
the incubator.

However they are a day early, again. They are all healthy, I have
checked the temp with three different thermometers and everything seems
to be right with humidity. They just come out on day 20. This is
probably the third time (eggs from the same breeders). I was blaming the
warmer days of summer maybe causing the stored eggs to develop slowly
over the week before incubating but we have been having lovely cool
weather for a month now. Maybe the parent stock were early chicks too
but I don't know.

Oh well, it isn't important really. Just thought someone else may have
some ideas.

Chicks under a hen will usually hatch in 20 days. Sounds like you've got
something right!

Oh that's okay then. I haven't hatched under a hen for ages and always

thought the standard was 21 days. Most of my normal hen eggs take that
long. Thought I'd split my hatchings between natural and artificial to
reduce my reliance on power so some of these silkies are destined to be
my broodies. They are so cute and a range of colours. Now we just hope
most are hens. :)

Well all the healthy ones popped out within 12 hours. The last couple

eggs which didn't hatch were dead in shell for various reasons, mostly a
couple days before hatch. One chick had a hernia, not unabsorbed yolk,
which had a fair bit of membrane wrapped around and 'round against the
skin, like it had got knotted up in the shell. Never seen anything like
it. I unwrapped it (which is how I know) but it didn't survive which is
probably a good thing.
