Okay, this one is odd:

One of the more widely-spread and persistent alternative health
theories is the idea that pH balance is a key to health. I remain
agnostic as to whether, say, staying in the alkaline range can prevent
cancer. But I found the idea interesting enough to spring a few bucks
for a container of pH test strips. Yes, I know the blood is
maintained in a tight pH range. We're talking other body fluids here;
in my case saliva. Every now and then I'd spit on a test strip just
for S&G, to see how my pH was.

Well, hitherto it has always come out at 7.25, considered optimal for
health. No particular effort on my part to keep it there, it just
was. (It is true that I eat very few grains and almost no sugar, both
considered highly "acid forming.") Coincidentally or not, I have also
enjoyed excellent health.

A day or two after my diagnosis last week, it occurred to me to spit
on a pH test strip. My pH was down to 6.25, the supposed "unhealthy"
range. I have made a conscious, ongoing effort to get alkaline
minerals (potassium, et al) and eat "alkaline forming" foods, and have
gotten my pH back up -- but it keeps skewing back down again. I can
get it up to 7.25, but within a half a day or so it drops back to 7.0
or so. That's still in the supposedly healthy range, but I'm
wondering: WTF? What is this stupid germ doing to dick with my pH?
Does it create an acidic environment to protect itself or something?

Very odd. Any hypotheses, informed or otherwise? Bonus points for an
actual citation.

believe that anyone can take it seriously, although I will admit up
front that it is not quite as silly as homeopathy. It's close though.
I'm talking, of course, about pH woo, the concept that pretty much
every disease (or at least a whole heck of a lot of them) is caused by
alterations in your blood pH, usually to the acid side, and that all
you have to do to restore health is to "alkalinize your blood." While
it is true that acidosis can be a sign of disease, in most people
without certain severe states of disease, the body's homeostatic
mechanisms make it difficult to alter blood pH outside of a very
narrow range."

Yes, yes, I know this. You may notice I stated that I'm agnostic on
the health benefits, and I'm aware that blood pH is maintained in a
tight range.

It remains that coincidentally with Lyme my salivary pH not only was
considerably lower than I'd ever seen it before, but furthermore that
it persists in shifting downward. I have found *one* statement that
the toxins released by Bb are acidic, I have also read repeatedly that
it can strip the body of magnesium. I'm wondering if these may be
having an influence.
