FYI, FWIW....

Just for the record, google does crappy things on posts.

Besides the glitches (where I speculate hackers are probing my
applications by getting past my Zone Alarm using exploits that would
get past a firewall), google also (seems to) keeps all responses to a
thread in that same thread even if you change the subject to that
thread. At least when using PINE on a unix shell account, if you
change the subject, it generates a new thread and google picks it up
as such.

So, when threads get to having 40-50 followups, its a long download
because they dump most if not all of the thread into your browser
cache. Pain in the ass to find stuff you want.

It can be done, I think, to grab off the whole post to the clipboard
and then past into a new post which makes it possible to keep the
whole thread N from getting cumbersome, but its extra "hands and
mirrors" and also cumbersome.

Or, I have to get another shell account and pay for it. Best
technology is often not free.

The server is what you have to pay for.

But you're already paying newsguy aren't you?
Most ISP's now offer newsgroups free also. Verizon does.
#News (NNTP) server: news.verizon.net

If not Forte's APN is $3/ month. Very cheap.

You were responding to "stray dog", not me. Ah b fahn. And near as I can
tell that newsreader you are fond of only works on Bill Gates crap. I,
being a non-monopolist use Linux. I use the pan newsreader. I don't like
it a lot but it serves me well enough.

http://www.motzarella.org comes to mind. Good service from my experience.
But you have to ax yourself why it's free.

You were responding to "stray dog", not me. Ah b fahn. And near as I can
tell that newsreader you are fond of only works on Bill Gates crap. I,
being a non-monopolist use Linux.

Good for you, but when I had a linux box running here, it got hacked
(somebody, out there, put a rootkit on my box and every time I booted
up, AND connected to the net, it was sending out code to somewhere,
probably on an IRC channel).

There are a number of solutions to rootkit problems.
Tripwire or similar. That's work though. The easiest
is probably a CD system -- don't like what's happened
reboot and you're back to what was on the cd.

You can also look at the *BSD OSs which tend to
be a little more secure than the Linux branch. In
High Security mode the systems files are all locked
down.

Quote:
So, what do you do for a firewall? I've been running ZoneAlarm on my
Win98SE box (I don't like Bill Gate, either, by the way). And, the ZA
I use is an earlier version before the put in non-opt-out spyware in
the later versions.

you might, based on you comment below, want to
look at PC Tool's Firewall.

Quote:
And, properly configuring a firewall is not a walk in the park. I read
Ed Skoudis' book on "Malware" and that told me that the hackers are
way ahead of everyone.

Quote:
I have an old system (needs only a cpu and memory and floppy and 2
cheap network cards) on which I run Brazil Firewall (free download) that
sits between me and my cable modem. I also use Firestarter (a rig that
makes kernel routing firewall stuff easy to do) on my actual desktop
system.

I'll have to look into that someday.

What bothers me is that I've read in several books on hacking that a
badly configured firewall is worse than no firewall at all. I don't
know enough to argue against that claim, but I widh I did. Its all
very complicated and in my readings the primary purpose was to find
out approximately what the hackers can do.

The other statement I read in the firewall/malware books is that there
is a lot of malware that _can_ easily get past firewalls because
firewalls can't detect the malware. Eg. java and javascript which
comes into your browser and does bad things to you. They all say you
should lock down eveerything on your browsers, no password saving, no
auto downloading, etc.

You should really try to get a better understanding
of security and what tools apply to which situations.
Firewalls will never do anything to stop malware.
Other tools will do that.

The best way to avoid installing malware on you
system is not to just let everything install
crap on your computer. Even using a little common
sense with IE on Win32 systems will cut a lot of
that out if you just use the security zones correctly.

If you want someone else to solve the problem so
you don't need to think then you need to pay
for the high priced tools that will act as your
gatekeeper.

Yes, that is a good question. Google is free, too, but they also get
to dominate a market, collect any kind of information they want, and
do all manner of marketing research, and then throw "commercials" at
you at the same time. Not my definition of "free".

Well, Motz is a raw NNTP server, so it's not because they throw ads at you,
unless they inject their own spam into newsgroups, and I never saw any
evidence of that.

Pretty obvious that they datamine what their subscribers read and post.

Then there are all the databases out there. I just read a book review
in yesterday's Wash Post and it seems like what they were saying in
the review of "Spys for Hire" is that the US budget for intel is $60
bil/year now, and all of 3/4 of it is going to private contractors
(including Choice Point and many othere.

Speaking of that, there is a very important article in Business Week,
June 9, 2008, entitled "The Trouble with Background Checks" and its
all about how corporations are using these to decline jobs to people.
If you ever, in a moment of a bad judgement, did something wrong, and
it eventually gets into these databases, then you're screwed for life.
They also talked about how that big Choice Point breakin some 1-2
years ago was for the purpose of identity theft and who knows how many
crooks are out there using YOUR identity to do things. And, then the
mistakes get into the databases and you can't get them corrected.
Also, they are basically beyond the reach of our court system, that is
if you can even afford courts/lawyers.

Big Brother ("1984") is out there.
