while, but office seems to be pushing this...

I do not have a dog in the fight, so to speak, so please know that up front.
I only had a son and he is 30. I would not by any means give this shot to my
daughter(s). It is too new and they give it when a girl is starting puberty
a very volatile time in a body and they have no idea what may happen down
the road. Remember thalidomide? DES? These were "safe" great drugs as well.
I do not by any means trust the FDA or the pharmaceutical companies. I think
with proper education and medical care you can be protected far better than
experimenting with a vaccine. Just my opinion. My DIL thinks it is safe, but
she is an ARNP and my niece who is studying to be a PA also thinks it is
okay but they are "in the system" and I just think are more willing to "buy"
this easier than those of us with more concerns. It, in my opinion, is way
too new, given at way to dangerous an age of a developing body and just is
too under studied. It is a great idea but I would not gamble with my
daughter's future reproductive system and/or body.

I'm with you, Sue. I'm a bit wary about this, especially because I know
that it's only effective against a few strains of HPV, and as those
decrease others will increase. I have one daughter who is too old for
the vaccine - 16 - and another who is just 9, but I'm quite reluctant to
go along with this. No vaccine is 100% effective, and this one was
shoved onto the market a little too quickly for me.
Now the latest is that HPV can cause oral cancers in men so now the push
is on to have *all* kids get this thing. Oy.

Both of my daughters are grown, so I'm essentially in the same place you
are, but I'd like to third that. I'd be pretty nervous about something this
new and untried. Who knows what effects they're going to find down the
road? Of course, it may turn out to be the greatest thing since Swiss
cheese, but I just wouldn't be anxious to have my kid be a guinea pig.

Frankly I don't like the idea of using any "new" drug or vaccine. I want to
see a long, long trial! My neurologist says Plavix is a big farce,
statistically about 1% better than aspirin 81 in tests! Look at some of the
fancy newer statins that we are now being told have been falsely advertised,
and the generics are every bit as effective!
If it were a matter of life or death, yes, I'd try a new drug, but as long
as I am getting along just fine on the older tried and true medications I
will stick with them. My daughter is old enough to make her own decisions,
but my advice would be "NO!"

Figures. I guess that 1% is worth the HUGE price difference in Plavix
compared to generic aspirin, heck even brand-name Bayer

Yeah, but a good accountant would say that the marginal benefit obtained
to that increased cost is probably prohibitive.

Would not, nope, no way - too new, too limited, just too iffy. |
