Last week-end, I just wanted to update my GPS II Pilot as I do since
many years. I connect to Garmin site and get the data and the unlock
code (after giving my credit card data... of course).
Then, the program is just able to say ...that it cannot connect
to the device (COM1 at (no spam) 9600 bps) ;-( However, my flight planner
program is able to connect to my GPS. Then I suppose there is a BUG
within the Garmin program (running Window XP/SP2).
I have written more than one email ..without any answer. The
service is a word which does not seem to belong to Garmin ...as
it was in the past. They only know now how to get easily money
from a credit card ...and the "no refund possible" term.
I have appreciated my GPS ...but now, if I need to buy another
one due to the lack of update, I sure will not buy another Garmin.
Any one else with a similar problem ?

Jack,
I don't think that I can provide any help myself - except maybe point
you to
alt.satellite.gps.garmin
where you find the gurus.

Sorry to hear that. Been a while since I used a GPS II but assuming it
os on COM1, are you sure no other application (such as your flight
planner) is still active and hogging the COM port? Have you tried a
reboot?

How very different Gramin has become from its early days. They built
up their business and reputation by offering super service. No
grotesque unlock codes, and a very friendly and knowledgeable and
acomodating tech would answer their phones by the second ring. |

I did ALL ...but never succeed. Then I did the test with my Flight
Planner to be sure that it wasn't a hardware problem. As I did my
last update 2 years ago ...I hadn't any problem.
Now I am really angry against Garmin... not answering my emails.
Then I sure never want to buy another Garmin during my life ;-(

I don't know if I can help, especially since I only had a GPS V, but try
changing your gps to 19,200bps. If that doesn't work, right click on My
Computer, then Computer Manager, then Device Manager. Look for Ports (COM &
LPT) and right click on COM1. Make sure the port is enabled. Go to Port
Settings then choose 115200 for bits per second, 8, none, 1, flow control
none. Say Okay. If everything looks good on that part but your GPS doesn't
work there are two things you can try. One is to uninstall the COM1 (you can
do it from the same in Device Manager, right click on COM1 and uninstall).
The computer will try to reinstall it once you log back into your machine.
If your operating system doesn't try to reinstall COM1 you need to go into
your BIOS and turn it on. Because all motherboards are different I can't
help you on that one part. Sorry. But at least you have something to go by.
Good luck.

I've had a similar problem when I had Palm HotSync loaded. It tied up
Com1, but the only indication I got was that I couldn't get anything
else, including my GPS, to connect. You might see if there's anything
that's using Com1.

Thanks... this was the solution (an old Palm installed some years ago
and uncompletely removed).
I got a very fast answer from the "sales" All other answers from
"support" were very late and without any solution...
I don't know if the problem is now on their FAQ, as it seems easy to
diagnostic it.
