Friday I had to make up some mounting assemblies for some hi pressure
coolant pumps for some machine tools I was retrofitting. Ive made them
before using UniStrut, and my lil bitty Lincoln Weldpac 100, with good
results, but the flux core slag was not fun to brush off. It was a
rush job, had to get them made, other stuff was depending on it, the
cell phone was ringing nonstop, a client had bounced a check, everyone
wanted everything done today!!!!

I happened to be in a shop that has a welding department, little used,
that Ive access to, so cut the required bits of unistrut on the worst
piece of shit abrasive saw Ive ever had the misfortune to be inflicted
with, then started hunting for a grinder to knock off some of the
galvanize in the weld areas. Found 3. All dead or shooting sparks.
The imported 10" pedistal grinder ran for 2 minutes, blew out a BIG
cloud of magic smoke and expired nosily as the bearings seized up and
the windings turned incandescent before the 50 amp breaker popped....

So there I am with a file, trying to knock off galvanized.....phone
ringing non stop.....

Nice Lincoln 251 sitting on the shop floor, loaded with stainless
wire. Digital readouts, all sorts of interesting buttons and
whatnot..and no one knows how to set it up, least of all me. So I
punched buttons, turned knobs and tried it out.
Burned a hole the size of the Grand Canyon in the first workpiece...

Punched buttons, turned knobs and whatnot somemore and managed to get
er down to a more managable range but couldnt figure out how to set
wirespeed. Shrug..no problem..Im a Dauber afterall.

Welded up all 3 assemblies, gorilla welds, some of the nastiest and
ugliest welds Ive ever seen. Im cursing Lincoln, the fumble fingered
bastard who previously set up the machine, the moon, sunspots and
cosmic rays, stainless on galvanized...ya..thats it....cant weld galv
with stainless....

They managed to find me an angle grinder, had a pad and a sheet of
sandpaper in it...actually worked pretty good, though in the process I
managed to slice a 2" gash in both my brand new $35 Wranglers and the
leg underneith it..... that sandpaper is really fucking
sharp......cleaned up the welds and the nasty zinc ash left behind..,
took a while for the bleeding to stop and had to change socks what
with all that blood making it soggy.....

A simple 30 minute job went about 1.5 hours dicking around....

And as Im cleaning up, I pick up the gun and push the button..and
didnt hear any gas.....I discovered Id run all those crappy welds with
no gas........turned on the gas...did a couple test welds...pretty,
shiney and laid down nicely. No cleanup needed.....

Sigh....it was one of those days.......

Don't sweat it, man. I had quite an embarrassing moment when trying
to use a plasma cutter. I could just barely gouge into the metal with
it and I was getting beaucoup frustrated.

I checked that the air was on and plugged in. I checked that the
amperage was up. I tried again and then started swearing. I yelled
for the instructor to say that I can't get the &$*# machine to cut.

He came over and calmly said, "Usually I like to attach the ground to
the work piece."

DOH! Now I NEVER forget to check to see that the work lead is
connected!

Live and learn. Now I just calmly ask, "This isn't working. Can you
show me what I'm doing wrong?" :)

Eating crow isn't so bad. You just have to open wide! haha

I feel ya. No gas sucks worse than no ground clamp because you tell on
yourself by having to fire up a grinder. I can handle the pants and the
blood. The consta-ring of the phone pushes it. Rubber checks are bullshit.
I got stiffed for a few grand earlier this year. I feel ya.

Serenity now!

Don't sweat it man. that's just karmic cash flow.

In order to be a functioning enterprise in the modern karmic economy, you
have to spend some karma to get some karma.

To live like a monk (karmic robber barons) accumulating only good karma, is
actually bad karma. It is hoarding the karma supply and can lead to global
karmic stagflation.

Consider yourself lucky. All that the scope cost you is 28 bucks and a
couple of crappy welds.

Id not thought about that aspect. Indeed!

And then there was Carmen.

The crappy welds were really worth it.

depending on which part of South America/Mexico yall come from.

On the bright side, you've given your immune system some necessary
exercise -- you wouldn't want it getting lazy, after all.
