I had an exam recently, the dentist spotted a
tooth with a few "small" fractures, extending proximal
to distal. He recommended a filling; that is, drill
out the damaged area, then fill it, like a cavity.
Is this a usual procedure for such a diagnosed tooth?

The dentist would have to determine the extent of the fracture before
determining the best treatment.

I usually ignore fracture lines with NO color change. Those which stain
black get cut out.

He didn't mention the color. He put the
tooth on the 'watch list', which I guess
means not urgent.

I don't expect a diagnosis here, I'm
wondering if treating a fracture like
a cavity is usual. This is the first time
I've heard of it.

If the crack doesn't extend down the root, it may well be the
appropriate treatment.
