The shuttle's launch time is set for May 31 at 5:01pm; that makes it 7:01am
here in Melbourne. Correct? |

17:01 EDT is 22:01 BST and 21:01 GMT. The rest depends on what offset
Melbourne time has from GMT, which is something that should be known
locally. <URL:http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-date5.htm> has a Form
converting between GMT and another place whose TZ string is known;
examples provided include NY & NSW - but check the strings yourself.

In sun time, eastern australia ia 10 hours behind eastern USA in
northern summer, and 8 hours behind during northern winter.
so if it is 17:01 in new york, it is 17:01 - 10:00 = 07:01 in Melbourne.
(and then you add a day to it). |

No, you're doing what I did for the last shuttle launch and got myself in
quite a kaffuffal over it. So I found this:
http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc and 5pm East Coast U.S. is
7am East Coast Australia, but the next day - International Date Line is
between Australia and the U.S. of A - that's what stuffed me up last time. |

Isn't that what John meant by "and then you add a day" ?
