Agreed. The area before the Western Wall plaza is full of mansions of
the priestly class from the late Second Temple period, buried after
the destruction of the city and then unearthed thanks (sic) to the
destruction of its synagogues and Jewish residences during the
Jordanian occupation (1948-67) of the Old City. Since Hadrian built
the Old City (aka Aelia Capitolina) on the ruins of the Second Temple
city in this part of town, why should the structures found now be
dated to the far earlier era when most of the city was to be found to
the southeast, the City of David area?
In any case, I shall certainly be intrigued to see what comments
appear in the archaeological press on this discovery.
(If I had my druthers, they'd excavate the whole place, but I hope
they preserve the Dome of the Rock, one of the world's great
buildings.)
