I recently installed the PayPal plug-in for Internet Explorer and just used
it for the first time today.

I am very impressed with both the convenience and security.

I can now use this plug-in to pay any online vendor, whether they accept
PayPal or not. It automatically fills in my demographic info and then
generates a one-time use credit card (Mastercard) for that particular
transaction. The one-time credit card number then expires and cannot be
used again.

This is one of the best things I've downloaded in a long time. I like to
shop vendors that accept PayPal, but the majority still don't. Now I can
buy from any vendor I want and use my PayPal account for the funds.

If you use PayPal, check it out.

My only gripe is that the plug-in only seems to work with IE and not other
browsers. I do like the current version of IE, however, so that's not a big
issue for me. Would be nice if it worked with Opera, which is my favorite
browser, but you can't have everything.

For a while, Paypal was doing the same thing. I installed a plug-in thing
from them and I would have it generate a one-time use master card number
for me to use and it would withdraw it from Paypal.

Ed, tks for the paypal tip. I've been looking for an online payment
solution like this.

BTW, you should try the latest firefox 3.0 beta 5. It is a lot faster
than the latest IE (and perhaps safer security-wise).

Unfortunately, the PayPal plug-in is not currently compatible with Firefox
3.0, arrrggghhhhh.

Thanks for the recommendation, however, that is the fastest browser I have
tried. I'm going to keep it.

Unfortunately, for those who've been using the 2.x series of Firefox
and have numerous plug-ins (like me Smile, many of the plug-ins (most,
the last time I checked, which was a couple of weeks back) will be
incompatible with the new 3.x browser, at least for a while yet, until
they get "caught up."

In the interim, though, there's a way to check out the version 3 beta
without disturbing your 2.x installation.
Details here: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/test

Works slick if you follow the instructions carefully.

Anyway, the extension incompatibility problem will gradually lessen
and essentially go away as the official release nears, I'm sure.

That's what I was referring to, the plug-in from PayPal.

Downloaded that version of firefox and so far like it a lot, especially
after I found an extension that would give me mouse gestures like Opera
does.

Just be careful of the limits. If you do over something, I think, like
$500 or $1000 a month, you have to convert to a commercial account, in
which case any transactions get hit with their 2.3% (or whatever it is)
surcharge even if they are cash.
