My mothers cousin had a windmill that charged batteries on his farm
already in the 30's. So what else is new?

Resistance is the main problem to long range DC transmission. I
suppose a high enough voltage might overcome that.

Yep. Ultrahigh voltage offsets resistance of the line, so the voltage

drop in the line becomes negligible (per Ohm's law).

But you would have
to convert it back to AC to be able to step it down to a useful
voltage.

Correct. Thyristor banks up-convert to UHDC and then down-convert back

to AC at the receiving end.

The Edison (DC) system as it existed wouldn't go far.

Voltage far too low, line resistance too high. oc
