My mothers cousin had a windmill that charged batteries on his farm

Yep. Ultrahigh voltage offsets resistance of the line, so the voltage
drop in the line becomes negligible (per Ohm's law).

Correct. Thyristor banks up-convert to UHDC and then down-convert back
to AC at the receiving end.
