Click on the spam message, "more options", "report message." If many
of us do it maybe Google will eventually do something.

This is basically a denial of service attack. It happens when the
spammers buy the Congress and they give them a free reign to disrupt
the Internet instead of putting them in jail.

It's happening on other groups. Google must know about it. They will
lose advertising revenue. So I say abandon Google.

What are the alternatives?

Wow. You have really strange ideas about the powers of Congress. Do
you think if Congress weren't so easily bribed, spam would disappear?

I know that someone is using newsgroup servers which you pay for, such
as Agent which have filters.
Maybe Yahoo can do it too.

I'm using aoie which is a free newsgroup server. And I am using Mozilla
thunderbird to pick up the posts. They have a filter which doesn't seem
to work, and the format is not as good as Google in many ways, but the
main thing is that they deliver much less spam.

I'm not seeing any spam recently. What are you referring to?

Maybe it's just on Google. (Another reason to take 20 minutes
to install and configure a newsreader).

Google don't give a damn. Use other news servers,
even search engines (such as Yahoo), other that Google.

Indeed more and more people are finding other news servers and readers,

readers that allow them to filter the spam or join the growing group of
posters who simply block _all_ posts from Google.

I understand there are news servers that filter spam before it even gets
to you. How's aioe newserver?

Does Yahoo provide newsgroup read and post services?

You need:

1) A newsreader.

2) A news server.

A newsreader is a piece of software. It is included in many browsers.
You appear to be using Mozilla. The Thunderbird email client (which
you might already have installed, or you might have to download (free)
and install) includes a newsreader. There are also free newsreaders
(such as Forte Free Agent) and newsreaders with advanced features
that you can buy. Google "newsreader".

A news server is a computer that carries Usenet articles and dispenses
them. There is a network of thousands of them around the earth. Your
ISP may have one for which you already have access. If not, there
are public newservers which cost nothing, or you can pay to subscribe
to a news service. Google "news server".

Once you take twenty minutes or so to install and configure a newsreader
(very easy) you're all set.

Google is good as a back-up for when you're not at your home computer.
Otherwise it's a pain in the neck.

Questions?

Here's a yet to be completed FAQ: What to do about Google Spam

Google groups is the major source of spam on Usenet. Google groups is
also a major source of off topic and/or idiotic posts. For that reason, a
growing number of people are now blocking all posts from Google groups.

http://www.improve-usenet.org/index.html

It is useless to complain to Google, office number (650) 253-0000.
However it is easy to avoid the deluge of spam from Google.
First use a news server other then Google.
Second download a real news reader that will allow filtering.
Filtering can be used to block most spam
or alternatively, simply block all Google posts, which
is most efficiently done filtering on the Message-ID.

NNTP news servers
Most ISP include a news server with the account
http://www.teranews.com (one time $3.95 set up cost, worth it)
news://news.aioe.org text only, no cost
automatic installation with Outlook Express

News servers that block spam
http://www.glorb.com/usenet.php
http://www.databasix.com/groups $50/year
http://individual.net 10 Euro/year

News Readers
SeaMonkey
Forte Agent (excellent, inexpensive)
Thunderbird (in development)
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird
Gnus (for emacs)
for Mac Users: MT-Newswatcher, hogwash, thoth (not supported)

News sources, web and otherwise and references to news sites

http://dmoz.org/Computers/Usenet/Public_News_Servers
http://www.alt.free.newsservers.net
http://freenews.maxbaud.net/>

NewsProxy (proxy news source, may be complicated)
http://bearware.info/NewsProxy/newsproxy.html

commercial news servers
Giganews http://www.giganews.com ($8/month, worth it)
Supernews http://www.supernews.com
Newsfeeds http://www.newsfeeds.com
Usenetserve http://www.usenetserver.com
Easynews http://www.easynews.com
Altopia https://www.altopia.com

Newsgroup for discussing Usenet abuse: news.admin.net-abuse.usenet

Newsgroup for discussing Google: alt.google-sucks
If your news server isn't carrying it, ask your
system administrator to add it to the the active file.

Google should be given a Usenet Death Penalty (UDP)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet_Death_Penalty
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/U/Usenet-Death-Penalty.html
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/I/Internet-Death-Penalty.html

Using another web search such as
http://yahoo.com
http://www.webcrawler.com
http://www.ask.com
may eventually get Google's attention that they're doing something wrong.
