What about the name "hole", as in an electron-hole pair generated when
a photon, err, I mean a light quanta with proper energy (wavelength),
is absorbed by semiconductor? Actually I was thinking about this
process when I posted the original message.

A hole in a semiconductor is in fact really and truly particle-like --
remarkably and more or less totally particle-like, in fact: has distinct
mass, charge, diffusion coefficient, mobility, etc.

But then, it is actually a missing electron -- a true particle -- in a
valence or conduction band; and has no connection to photons as
particles.

Shockley's "parking garage" analogy is still a vivid demonstration of
the brilliant teaching abilities he actually had.
