I am looking for an abbe refractometer that will measure SOLID
polished samples with index in range of 1.6 to 1.85.

I am aware of liquid one's that go that high but not SOLID ones.

I am also aware of the minimum deviation method and have tried this,
but need better resolution.

Also if you know of a company who will perform these high index
measurement on SOLID polished surfaces that would also be appreciated.

If one does not exist, who wants to design and build one?

I think that a Pulfrich refractometer would do the trick.

Now for some for some reason they seem to be relegated to the realm of
antique instrunents.

What's the size of your samples?

I also assume that they include a flat surface.

If you have a goniometer you might want to look for the Brewster angle but
this
a very imprecise method.

Very nice hi rez photos, thanks.

I have prisms with polished faces with sizes of about 2x2mm to 5x5 or
3x8mm in size, with these I have been doing the minimum angle of
deviation method using red and green lasers with very long measurement
arms to increase the accuracy. All the instrument makers I have
called dont have the high index solid material that goes up to 1.80 or
1.85, only liquid samples.
