The Indian government has promised to compensate farmers for
catastrophic failure of the cotton crop. Monsanto's "Bollgard" GMO
cotton promised pest resistance and higher yields. But farmers
reported lower yields and extensive losses.
While the government promised compensation for farmers, opposition
leaders demanded that Monsanto be "blacklisted." I'm not sure what
that means, but at least they aren't expecting Monsanto to pay them.
Perhaps after the experience of Indonesian farmers, they knew that was
a lost cause.
