You are probably aware that the planet Jupiter is made up
of 99% of all the mass in our Solar System other than the
Sun. Jupiter is so large that if you lined up eleven planets
the size of Earth in a straight line, they would just about
span the diameter of the giant gas planet.
Now line up three of those Earth-sized planets and they
would fit nicely into Jupiter's Great Red Spot. In fact, even
though Jupiter is very far from Earth even at its nearest
approach...
Did you know?
Jupiter exerts a gravitational pull on Earth that is fully twice
the pull of the planet Venus on Earth at its nearest distance.
And Venus is our closest neighbor next to the Moon. When
calculating the details of the Earth's motion through the Solar
System, the pull of the Sun must be taken first into account,
and then the pull of the Moon. After that, Jupiter comes third.
