Inspired by the vehicles in the movie MINORITY REPORT and prompted by
customers who
wanted a solar powered people mover, Mok Industries has developed new
magnetic tread system that implements the movements of the 'maglev'
vehicles portrayed in the movie. Despite its name, the tread system
doesn't use maglev, it uses magclamps to climb walls. The treads
based on magnetic clamps
used as a base in metal working shops, are made from neodymium
magnets.and the treads formed into a magnetic caterpillar track
capable of supporting the vehicle in any position. The treads are
switched 'on' when put in contact with an 18 guage metal sheet, and
switched off when the treads roll off the sheet at the end of the
caterpillar track. Each track is 8 inches wide and 22 inches long.
Two treads operate together in a tractor, and two articulated tractors
at either
end of a mobile pod move the vehicle in any direction. The treads
rotate in the same direction to move the vehicle end in that
directoin. The treads rotate in opposite directions to turn in
place. As teh treads move and articulate, the transport pod stays
rock steady oriented by accelerometers to maintain vertical directly
through the floor no matter how the pod moves.
A power line is situated at the edge of a 24" sheet metal track
provides power
through the treads to the system. The treads with 40 half inch
neodymium magnets 8 inches long provide up to 760 pounds of clamping
force and
provide over 3,000 pounds of lift for the system. The 1/2 inch
diameter and 8 inch
long diametrically magnetized cylinders are rotated 90 degrees in a
soft iron/aluminum tread by cams when the move along the caterpillar
to activate and deactivate them. The rolling friction on the metal
plate is about equal to that of a rubber tire. The 24" wide roadway
is supported 40 feet in the air on poles, standing on its edge with
vehicles moving in one direction on one side, and vehicles moving in
the other direction on the other. Vertical tracks situated on
columns
allow the pods to maneuver to the surface at any point along the
track, or even flip from one side to the other by climbing above or
below the track since the treads hold in any orientatoin. Two 35
horsepower motors lift each pod which lifts up to 500 pounds, up a 40
foot column to an overhead track in less than a second and a half,and
propel it along at 45 mph The system will be used as a people mover
gathering system in a large parking lot in Ohio and be totally solar
powered. |

I haven't the tiniest idea what you're talking about.
In the UK a 'people mover' is what's called a 'minivan' in the USA.
You're quite mad.

Well, I've got this device that climbs walls using a magnetic clamp,
very similar to the way a magnetic base works in a machine shop.

Except here they are formed into treads and joined into a caterpillar
track.

And a patented cam setup rotates the neodymium magnets in each tread
to turn it on when it makes contact with a sheet metal surface, and
turns it off when contact is removed.

Two pounds of magnets - located in four tracks on two tractor pairs,
support up to 3000 pounds on an 18 guage sheet metal strip only 24
inches wide.
Its really just a magnetic caterpillar track, but one that can run up
and down sheet metal walls and surfaces. The suspension is
conformable so the track can run in circles around tubular structures
for example, or maintain contact on a concave or convex surface.
A pair of tracks operate like a tank track. Both forward and you move
the pair forward. Both back and you move the pair back. Opposite
directions, and you spin in place. The pair are called a tractor.
Two tractors on the end of a pod - each tractor articulated in 3
dimensions - allows a wide variety of movement across shaped sheet
metals surfaces- and allows a computer equipped with an acelerometer
set to maintain very stable conditions even in a rapidly moving pod
moving in unusual ways.
Basically I wanted to make something like in the movie... haha.. and
I did. The roadway being sheet metal forms one pole of a two pole
system - the ground - that powers the system very similar to the way
bumpercars work.
The advantage of this system in the proposed application (other than
being powered by the solar power system at this park) is that the
mobile pods can climb to and descend from the overhead track along any
support column from the ground. So access can be made anywhere a
column exists in the large parking lot. The pods can also hang
anywhere along the track underneath since traffic goes on either side
of the wall like track - one way. To reverse direction the vehicle
climbs up one side and rotates over to the other. To stop, it climbs
down to the underside of the track and hangs there. So, response
times and access locations are superb for the system. The central
gate at the park as a large circular structure - looking very much
like stonehenge, where vehicles climb down pillars after circulating
around the cylindrical lintel located above the supporting posts. A
fountain operates in the center of the cylindrical structure.

Please know that in the USA people mover is not a minivan generally.
Knowing that you were from Britain I would certainly not be confused
