: How long should it be before I can
: 1. eat solids
Probably the next day. In the meantime, Slimfast, Ensure, Boost
or other weight loss drinks may bring some relief of hunger.
: 2. smoke cigarettes
Never. After a dental extraction, you may not have a cigarette
ever again. Serious complications like lung cancer, burned
clothes, and emphysema may result if you do.
: 3. drink alcohol (bearing in mind the antibiotic)
Typically about two years is the right time to let the antibiotic
clear completely.
:
: Thanks.
:
: PS. I have a follow-up appointment at 1pm next Tuesday, but was
hoping I'd be
: able to do most, if not all, of the above before then!
Your health is essential. Please preserve it.

: > Likely, a diluted H2O2 rinse can help break down the blood to
get the gauze out.
: > This long after surgery you shouldn't still be using them.
:
: H2O2? I'm a few years out of chemistry class, I'm afraid, but
isn't that
: Hydrogen Peroxide?
CY: Exactly!
ie. Bleach?!
CY: Wrong.... bleach is sodium hypochlorite.
Are you sure I should be putting that on
: open wounds?
CY: Hydrogen peroxide, yes. It foams, bubbles, and releases
oxygen. Great for cleaning, and some folks say the oxygen is a
germ killer.
:
: I've been able to prod the gauzes a little with my tongue,
which is progress,
: but they're rather firmly attached to the top gum. I do have
some Listerine,
: which I've been avoiding because I imagine it would hurt like
hell...
CY: I'd also avoid the listerine. Try hydrogen peroxide.
:
: > Once you get the gauze out it may bleed, use new packs for
20-30 min
: > then remove them. If still bleeding repeat once or twice
more.
: > Once bleeding stops to a slight ooze you don't need the packs
anymore.
:
: Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. Nearly 24 hours
since the
: operation now and the same gauzes are still wedged in place. I
shall try a
: gentle warm salt water rinse to start with and see how I get
on.
:
CY: Git im, tiger!
: > Stiffness is quite common, moist heat packs can help relieve
this.
:
: Ah, I do have one of those. I'll give it a go. Many thanks.
CY: And treat for symptoms.

Milkshakes, Slimfast, Boost, Ensure. All dairy based, but they go
down easy.

You can't shout down a troll.
You have to starve them.

: I've tried this, and things are certainly a little better,
although it's still
: an effort.
:
: I'm off to buy some yoghurt, weetabix, fruit juice, etc.
Thanks, all.

Bleach is NaHClO (hypochlorite)
Ah, okay. I know you can bleach hair with peroxide, I guess that's what
confused me.
Quote: H2O2 at a low concentration is quite usable as a mouth rinse.
Glad to hear it. I didn't need it in the end, but I appreciate the chemistry
lesson!

Yeah, the problem wasn't medical but physical. I couldn't physically get
the solid food into my mouth :)
Stiffness is loosening a little now. I can finally (just) fit a toothbrush
between my teeth ir order to brush them.

I saw four days elsewhere, and preferred it to your answer. Glorious nicotine.

I gave it two hours. No ill effects, as of yet ;)
