I recently had tooth #12 pulled by an oral surgeon (with iv sedation
because of tmj). It was a root canal tooth that was rotting under the
crown. I didn't know it til the crown fell off
the general dentist I went to prior to removal wanted to remove it
herself and I wouldn't let her. When I went back for valplast
removable fake tooth she did full mouth x-rays and discovered I had a
cavity in tooth # 9 and told me there is a twenty percent chance she
can save it and an 80% chance I will need a root canal. She said she
can do the root canal and I will not have to open wide, will not
require a post and will not need a crown. I have periodontal disease
and teeth #'s 7,8,9 and 10 have a splint behind them--done in 1994.
She told me if she breaks the splint she would repair it for a fee.
she didn't notice the end part is already broken.Geez. She also told
me I have 70% bone lose in these teeth. I asked her what the point
would be with 70% bone loss and how long would I have these teeth--she
told me she didn't know. What she told me about this root canal
doesn't make much sense. I feel like I talked to houdini.
I was thinking of going to an endodontist for tooth #9---problem is my
tmj is very symptomatic.. Please advice.
Also, she told me if I needed a bridge it would be Valplast from # 6
to 11,and would cost 3,600.00. I asked why valplast since i smoke
and have heard things about it that aren't too good. She gave me no
option. regarding tooth #12 she would give me a valplast removable
tooth for 950.00. A bridge with a removable next to it? This doesn't
sound quite right to me either but i really don't know
She also gave me opalescense treswhite supreme to bleach my teeth at
home for 180.00. I went to their sight and they claim cost thru
dentists is approximately 100.00. There are sights where I can
purchase direct for 57.00.
She claims her prices are very low but that seems to be for the
specialty she probably should refer only. Regarding dentures is that
general dentistry too?
Would appreciate any advice concerning any of above. I am living in an
area not known for good medicine or dentistry
Thanks,

Without X-rays and seeing you in person, we don't know for sure what
to recommend. However, what you describe sounds more like a train
wreck than an easily restorable dentition.
Perio (with a 13 year old splint), TMJ problems, 70% bone loss,
likely endo on #9, decay under a crown to cause tooth loss, and
a smoker. You only need three strikes to be called out in baseball.
Looks like an easy 6 for you.
Yes, general dentists do dentures.
Sorry,
D

What's all this percentage stuff ?
Just sends up a red flag for me.

Outrageous.

Run don't walk away from this dentist.

Doesn't sound logical to me.

If you can get a copy of your X-rays and post them here we may be
able to be more specific.
Otherwise, it sounds to me that you may need to see a periodontist
and a prosthodontist.
Seeing the Endo about #9 is not a bad idea but someone needs to
have an overview of your entire dentition and manage your treatment. |
