We've been talking about this situation, which reminded us of a
similar situation a couple of years ago in the mountains above Santa
Barbara in California.

The quote moots the idea of sulphides burning in air but there is no
reason to believe it isn't another reaction with perhaps reducing
agents in strata below the sulphides.
There always seems to be a propensity for sulphur bearing layers in
areas of volcanic activity. |

This poorly written article says the fire is due to a lightning

name its sources - instead it just refers to "government

You seem to think that a journalist should have his degree in physics
not the arts. Still at least you are objective.
For those of us too disinterested to see if the poster was commenting
on a previous post or on a link he had found; this is from the link he
posted above:
COIMBATORE: Smoke and flame are found emanating from a 40-feet long
and two feet wide crater, caused by lightning which struck on Friday
afternoon at Talaikuda village on the outskirts of Udhagamandalam.
According to official sources, nearly 300 eucalyptus trees were burnt,
following the lightning, which hit the area, and the big crater was
formed.
The smoke, which was found last evening, continued emanating heavily
on Saturday and a flame was visible deep below eight feet, the sources
said.
People, who went near it, felt burning sensation in eyes, headache and
nausea.
Experts from Geological Survey of India, who visited the area, have
informed their higher-ups in Chennai, about the development.
Some of them opined that the gas could be methane. However, they ruled
out the possibility of earthquake or eruption of volcano from inside
the crater.
But people in the area, majority of them tribals, were living in fear,
the sources said.
*******
It mentions a rather strange event and thus any so called scientiusts
are unlikely to be expert in the phenomenon discussed. Lightning does
not cause craters 40 feet long by 2 feet wide, the ground still
smoking hours later and choking fumes coming from flames in the pit it
is alleged to have caused.
Nice try Michael. Could do better. |
