Distant planet judged possibly habitable
In findings that if confirmed could stand as a landmark in history,
astronomers report finding the most Earth-like planet outside our
Solar System to date.

Indeed! While we may not benifit from the discovery, future
generations certainly could. Has Vegas put any odds out yet
on when he first probes will be sent/recvd. there or humans
will first get there to look around? Would be a nice gift
bet for the 50-100th generation grandkids to collect
on...(if Vegas still exists ca. >= 1000 yrs from now.)

I will guess the first xperimental probes will be built
around 500 yrs futureward--human missions maybe 1000 yrs
from now -- I'll guess we should have engines capable of
maybe 50% c by 2500 c.e.
for modest size probes; around 3000+ c.e. humans should be
planning their first gen ship trips.
Wish I could be there... ...tonyC

There is nothing known about this planet which qualifies it as Earth-
like. The mass is five times Earth's. It receives 244% of the total
starlight that Earth does, or about 25% more than Venus, which puts it
way above the runaway greenhouse threshold. It is almost certainly
tidally-locked to Gliese 581c. The most plausible formation scenario
has a Neptune-like world migrating inwards during the formation of the
stellar system.
