my broody Silkie started setting 5 eggs on May 1st. she's down
to 2 eggs because her nest box kept being invaded by the overly
large Orps, who crushed the other eggs...
anyway, yesterday an Orp took over her box while she was out
getting a bite to eat & miss broody settled into the box next to
it, with the result that the eggs were not sat on for around 4-5
hours. it was in the mid-50s yesterday.
are the eggs likely to still be ok?

Probably. If she started setting on May 1, those eggs will hatch
or not very soon, so it's worth a try to let her stay with them.
Good luck!

Can you isolate her and (hopefully) her chicks, so your more
agressive hens won't kill the chicks? I've had trouble with
that in the past. Need to build some sort of enclosure for
new mothers with chicks...

I have a question for you --

One of my hens went broody yesterday and started setting on a
couple of golf balls. Do you think she would accept a couple
of day old chicks from the feed store this soon? I'll try to
break her up, unless she'd raise some chicks for me...

My eggs started April 30 hatched Saturday.
