This is so OT its off the scale but I wondered if some of the folks in
Australia might be interested in case they have Scots ancestors. There is a
lot of it but you are all coming into long winter nights !!!

Our first entry is the 19th Century Napier Commission report into the life
and times of Highland crofters and cottars, one of Scotland's most important
historical records. Now for the first time, it is available from our online
elibrary. The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Condition of Crofters and
Cottars in the Highlands and Islands

The commission was set up as a response to crofter and cottar demonstrations
against excessively high rents, lack of security of tenure on land that had
been in families for generations and the forced evictions of crofters.

It is compelling reading and describes a great deal of the way of life of a
people and a place few know much about. Enjoy.

Are there still folks referred to as crofters? That seems to be quite an
arcahic term.
