We purchased some turkeys from a hatchery in our state a couple of weeks
ago...they seemed to be fine when they arrived...we put them in a
brooder...gave them fresh water and turkey starter and kept them warm
but lost one about a week later...then since then we have lost five
more...in all we have lost six of the ten making for a quite a high
mortality rate...seems pretty high. I asked the hatchery about it and
they said they usually don't have a problem unless they have a bad
shipment...to me this seems like a bad shipment...as far as I can tell
we took good care of them...anyone have any ideas what may have gone
wrong?...I HAVE heard that Turkeys are susceptible to disease (this is
the first time we've tried to raise turkeys)...we have Story's guide to
raising poultry and have tried to follow all the guidelines listed in
the book. |

Was your brooder disinfected and clean before you put them in? If not,
did you use it for chickens previous to putting the turkeys in it?
Turkeys have to be housed away from chickens due to blackhead disease.. |

It can be difficult to get turkey babies to eat at first. Did you make sure
you actually saw them all eating every day?

Yes...good question...that was a concern we had but they took to eating
right away....I've been check the remaining ones and they seem to be
fine so it seems just the six had some sort of problem...the hatchery
said they would give us a credit. |
