Hi, Mary

You can buy beak bits here http://www.homefarmfowls.co.uk/health.html they
also have a small description on how to use them.

10 for £1.00 I don't know where you are in the world but they send stuff
internationally.

These beak bits are not the same as the ones that I have. Mine don't stop
them shutting their beaks.
They were very successful, none of my fowls wear them now. All completely
cured of feather pecking and egg eating in 3 months.

I saw in 'Practical Poultry' a few editions ago - if my memory serves me
well - something like spectacles that some guy had used quite successfully.
They fitted across the beak so they just impaired the downward view of the
bird.

The beak bits I have have a pincer fitting to fit inside the nostrils and a
"plate" that goes under the top beak, the bit then pokes out slightly in
front of the real beak but has a dimple in front so they can't grip a
feather or have a pointed part to peck at an egg with. It doesn't stop them
closing their beak or prevent them from eating or drinking, but they do hate
it for about 24 hours. After that they seem to forget they have it on.
This type was very successful for me and I was able to remove them after a
while.
