My Norfolk Grey has hatched her Marans successfully a few days ago now,
although we lost one as he/she was a weakling - he survived a couple of days
but was so weak.

Mother is so proud of them and showing them off to everyone! She doesn't
mind me being at close quarters so I was wondering if it would be ok to
touch the chicks as I just can't resist the little powder puffs on legs!

You should handle the chicks as much as you can manage. A lot of early
handling makes for a flock that is easier to manage later.

If you distract Mum with some grub she may not mind but be prepared for her
to change her mind!!!!!! If you sit somewhere where you can offer her her
favourite treats then you can often get the chicks to explore you!
If the hens are used to you about then they usually either put up with it or
move away.
Some mums are rather more protective! and will let you know that your ideas
are not appriecated in no uncertain terms.
If it upsets Mum then leave well alone. It serves no purpose to handle them
and if they learn that Mum gets agitated when humans are around its a bad
lesson learnt.

In our experience of hundreds of birds that are rarely handled it makes not
one iota of difference. They respond to the immediate not the past.
Our birds are raised in batches of 30 - 60 usually and get handled very
little. They are very used to people about though.
They go on to domestic situations of 2 - 10 hens and in some get handled a
lot.
We are often complimented on how quiet and easy our birds are.
The only real lesson they have learnt, if any, is that they have nothing to
fear from us.

If you don't mind freaking mum out, go ahead. Otherwise wait a little.
