I just found this group, and it seems to still be active, so I thought
I'd ask a few questions if I may.

Decided to try my hand at raising some chicks this spring, and am
getting ready to order.

My intent is to order broilers to be raised in pastured pen, and then
since I believe in the albc mission, some Dominiques, Delawares, and
Buckeyes to try as layers.

I'm a natural kind of guy when it comes to livestock and gardening,
and don't like to medicate unless necessary, but want to take
reasonable precautions since this is my first try. So, one of the
options when ordering is for Marek's disease vaccination. Should I
get that? For both, or just the layers?

After getting many catalogs, I've decided to go with Meyer's Hatchery
in Polk, Ohio this time. Any one with any experience good or bad
from them?

Thanks, I'll post a few more in other threads.

Its might be worth finding out from the hatchery and separately from your
ag extension what the status of Mareks is in the breeding birds that they
were hatched from and in you local area respectively.
If there is no Mareks about in the breed stock or in your area then you
don't need it. But if the hatchery suggest that its recommended then go with
it.
