Interesting web page <http://www.soes.soton.ac.uk/staff/tt/eh/> on this
phytoplankton species which explains how it changes the reflectivity of
the worlds' oceans and creates some of the rock we live on. It reminds
me how easily replicators could have a global environmental or even
geological impact.
The mechanism of cocolith production might also serve as a template for
biological manufacture of simple nanotech components.
