I did hear back from the lady I emailed at one of the pet seizures
sites. She posted that she had heard about the Pedigree link to pet
seizures as well as a link to Purina foods because "they are low in
quality". I emailed her back and explained the situation of my GS and
she recommended the following (copied directly from her emailed response
to me)

I would recommend one of these foods:

Artemis Pet Foods http://www.artemiscompany.com/

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Adult Dog Formula

Wellness Pet Foods

Organica Pet Foods www.organica-pet.com 866-ORG-FOOD
The canned food is excellent and I would rate it as one of the top
5. However, the dry food is not as good.

Okay, I'm going to ask ... what is "animal digest"?

I don't for one second believe that Purina is as low in quality as she
thinks (The ONE line seems to be better than their rank-and-file line), but
I have read the labels for the Chicken Soup line and their ingredients list
is awful -- the same high in corn meal and animal byproducts stuff as all
the other dog foods. (And personally, I think that animal digest would be
worse for a pet than byproducts, so I refuse to buy any pet food that has
animal digest in it.)

Innova makes pet food out of people-quality ingredients, and Winnie really
loved Innova Senior. We have used Wellness also.

I know of Flint River Ranch to be good quality; however, I don't buy
things that are only sold under pyramid marketing schemes.

If you can find a feed store in your area, they usually have better prices
than the local chain pet stores.

But thanks for posting those links, I was thinking "animal digest" meant
something else.

Here are some links. I don't want to post the whole thing here in case it
makes somebody ill.

I went to the site, and the ingredients list looks pretty impressive, and
there is a store close by that is supposed to carry it. Didn't say anything
about price on their site, but I will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

My dogs eat a product called "Canidae" all natural. You can't find it in
a lot of places, but it is a mighty fine dog food. I buy the bags as well
as the cans. They have it for all ages. I buy it from the finest pet
stores here and grooming parlor.

http://www.canidae.com

On their website, they say they have just started to advertise. My guys
have been on this for about 2 years and it agrees with them. They make it
for cats too.

They are happy eating this food and they seem to be pretty healthy.

Mud Bay Granary is a chain around here with all good high end foods. I
will
vouch for the Wellness brand foods. My vet was stoked I was able to find
that locally for our cats (it's available for dogs too) dry and canned.
It
is such a good food.

By the way, Ed, such good news about your dog. I'm so thrilled to hear
she's doing better.

Incidentally, since when is Flint River Dog Food sold as a "pyramid
scheme?" I buy mine from a distributor by mail and I have never been
offered any pyramid-type incentives. I would prefer to buy locally, but
I have not found a brand that meets the criteria.

They might not recruit you to sell it, but if you sign up people under you
to sell it, you get overrides on their sales. And you *have* to hunt down
an individual dealer to purchase it. That qualifies it as a pyramid
scheme to me. I mean, there are perfectly decent products sold by pyramid
marketing (Avon, Usborne Books by home party plan, some nice clothing and
lingerie lines, my sister sells Creative Memories scrapbook stuff,
etc.) -- I just personally don't care for that type of marketing method.

I personally do not like pyramid type selling either. I buy my Flint River
which is shipped from Montana. I have never been asked to sign anyone up or
offered any kind of incentive, except they do e-mail when they have a sale,
which I am happy to take advantage of. If there is any type of pyramid
scheme it is not through the company I deal with.

That is impressive. I followed a vendor's link (just the first one) and
it's surprisingly no more expensive than what I've paid for Hill's or
Eukanuba. Will have to give it a try, as well. Thanks, Vickie!

FWIW, I've had serious problems when abruptly changing between even
premium brands. They always tell you to transition slowly by mixing more
and more of the new stuff, and I pshawed that. . . resulting in about a
week's worth of diarrhea for my poor dog when I went from Eukanuba
fish/potato (made to minimize filler) to Nutro oats/chicken (all that
oat bran--WOW).

I signed up for the "win free pet food for a year" contest at the
petfooddirect.com, BTW, and immediately got a 13% off coupon for my
first order, so extra incentive to try this! My Westie has allergy
issues (manifesting as itchy skin that drives her nuts), and it seems
that more natural food and simpler ingredients fare much better.

Let me know what you think. I have never seen anything negative on this dog
food. I know my guys love it. I ran out once and had to substitute with
Euk. and Mischka really got sick, but I don't know if it was because of the
sudden change in the food or if it was combined with moving, etc. He was in
the hospital for 4 days and could not eat normal food for a good month so I
will never let myself run out of it again. Some breeds have problems (shih
tzu are one of them) with various things so I wanted something that I felt
would be good for them that they would like.

In any event, I believe if they had had this dog food when I had my Bridgett
and Lady, I believe that their lives would have been entirely different.

You guys sound so knowledgeable about dog food, I thought I would ask if
anyone knows anything about Solid Gold? http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/

A while back I was searching for a better dog food for my friend, as
her Boxer had horrible digestion problems, and I found this food on a
chat site. People were raving about it. I was so impressed with what
they had to say that I bought some for my dogs.

I noticed a huge difference within a month with my older dog. She is a
lab mix and always had really stiff, coarse fur. I figured it was just
the way it was meant to be. But, after a month, her hair thickened up
dramatically and became really soft! And, she suddenly started acting
like a pup again, running all over the place and playing with the other
dogs. I actually tested the food by taking them off it for a month -
within 2 weeks my older dog's fur became the same way as before and she
seemed to have less energy. Then I went back to the Solid Gold
Hund-n-Flocken and fur became lush and soft again and back came the
energy.

Just wondering if any of you know how this food compares to what you
use?

Thanks!

Meri

I was shopping in Costco today and just out of curiosity I read the label on
the Costco "Kirkland" brand canned food.

Interestingly, from what I have learned thus far about ingredients, it reads
very well. The first three out of five ingredients are meat, and there are
no byproducts or animal digest at all.

It's also half the cost of the Pedigree canned food sitting right next to it
that does have byproducts and a much poorer quality list.

I'm kind of wary now about dog food but I almost bought some. Any of you
familiar with the Kirkland canned food?
