Anyone upgraded yet ?

Had to buy a new machine, it came with Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Seems nice enough, there is a myriad of 'flavors' of Vista.
Wondering when the bugs will show up.

Couldn't even buy an XP machine at Best Buy.

Dental PM software are not yet ready for Vista, so dental computers will
remain XP for a "while".

My Dad just bought a new machine with Vista (actually my sister and I paid
for it )

I beg to differ, the new PMS just purchased runs fine on Vista.

Wouldn't have upgraded if a new machine wasn't needed so badly.

I am trying to remember from my visit,,,,, you run Dentrix on the front desk
machines, right? I did not hear they would be ready for Vista for while
either. The machine back by your desk was built by a guy with a long front
porch (veranda?) at his house, if I remember correctly.

Just bought EZdental, they were having a special.
The old machine up front still works, it's just obsolete.
Kinda like me !

Tried an in-place upgrade yesterday from XP SP2 to Vista Business. 20%
into the installation process an error showed up saying "Cannot update
Boot configuration. Aborting installation". This is my home machine so
it doesn't matter; it's probably a good idea to wait for the first
service pack to come around before installing Vista on a business
machine.

Make sure your PMS will work on Vista and the company will support it,
before installing Vista on a business PC.

New machine came with Vista.
Suspect that XP machines will not be available very soon
as an off the shelf item.

You can always build one.

I am not sure,,,,,,,,,,,,, can't you just format the hard drive with XP, and
then upgrade to VIsta later since the hardware will be ready for it? Yes,
an extra step that the hardware vendor will need to be paid for.

Formatting a HDD cleans all of the information from the drive.

In the old days this was quite common if we had a full version
and backed up data.

Nowdays it seems to me that you are better off upgrading.

If starting from scratch the HDD is blank to begin with and
you must have the full version on/with a bootable disk.

In case of an upgrade the registry and file system is kept intact
which means lower performance and maybe reduced stability. Then again
it's less time consuming that installing from scratch and having to
reinstall / restore all your applications & data. So in the short term
upgrade wins out but in the long term you're better off with a clean
install.
