went down to the barn to close up the chickens last night...
and there's a possum (American opossum) sleeping in the heated
cat bed!

I don't like our weather but I like all your beasties much

Mr. Possum will be dispatched this evening (since i'm fairly
certain it will return. it seems to like the bed & breakfast
there). i really don't mind possums, but NOT in my chicken
coop!
we also have a skunk that visits the barn on a nightly basis
in the summer, but he's a 2 line skunk & not interested in
either chicken dinner or eggs. since he does a very good job
keeping the ground nesting wasp population under control, he's
welcome to a bit of catfood. at this point he's quite used to
us & we know he's usually there about kitty dinnertime, so
there has never been an 'incident'. almost had one last spring
though, as he brought his lady friend out to dinner...
apparently he forgot to tell her about the humans

Possums make reasonably good eating
Remember they're the marsupial native to Australia, "neighbouring" (across
the old land bridge supposedly) South America, and extending up to Central
America and some nearby regions of southern North America (dunno exactly
where their natural range finishes ? ......help anybody ? is it just Texas
and the coastal areas around to Florida or do they naturally occur further
inland too ?
Possums had decades previously been introduced to the main Islands of New
Zealand (1,000 mi from Australia) and have escaped from being childrens
pocket-pets to become an invasive damaging pest in NZ native bush areas.
The NZ native forests are not adapted to possums and damage terribly
compared to Aussie forests
Some folks trap them and sell the fur pelts., there's not a lot to eat on a
possum, but similar to a chicken it has a decent rump and 2 hind legs
......so hunters out in the bush often cook up a few "possum drumsticks"
after removing the pelt
