How about a newsgroup with "auto" or "car" in the name? Also try Google
(web pages and groups).

According to that, your Ford built Jeep dates from 1945, not 1943.
The Willy's serial numbers of that series are from 1943 however.

Thanks for that pointer.
The number is not the `serial number', but the one painted on the bonnet,
probobly by the US Army, or whoever. |

But it does agree with that serial number run, so I suspect that's also
the vehicle's serial number, and they painted it on the vehicle so that
it would be easy to see and catalog the vehicle for administrative
paperwork purposes by its number, without having to dig around on its
insides looking for the SN.
Did you check the internal serial number locations to see if they agree
with that number?
Of course if the engine ever got replaced that could screw it up.

No, was beaten by the darkness...

This has had a radiator core replaced 10-20 years ago, a 12 volt altenator
and batery and globes, but the original genny is sitting on a shelf, the lighting
switch has had a wiring change to make it different in some small way, and
the wingnut for the left headlight swing bracket has gone, and been replaced
by a hex nut. Not sure about the tires.
All the seats and top are totally original, the only rust I saw, not
that I looked hard in the few min, was surface rust on the flat part
of the front wings.
I suspect you will not find as original one as this outside a collection.
Oh, only 2 carefull, and one careless owners |

The website I found has detailed info on where the serial numbers were
stamped on them, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find.
Of course, the classic Bill Mauldin jeep cartoon:
