Hi all,

I was surprised, but Garmiin has a WAAS update for their GPS MAP76,
one unit that I had thought they discontinued updates.

Garmin has updated the firmware from 3.90 to 4.00 for improved WAAS
handling.

The webupdater didn't seem to catch it, telling me that 3.90 was the
latest. I went for the list by model individual updates to get this
and successfully updated.

So instead of WAAS numbers 35 and 47, I now have 35 and 48.

Btw, 48's bar does not seem to go solid black. Anyone know the facts
on this?

35 and 48 are neighbors, so if you get one, you should get the other,
barring local obstructions.

On my 60cs, I get 48 and 51, both as strong hollow bars. Only two show up,
and since those two are "good", I don't think I will ever see anything
else. 51 might show up as solid because, I recall, it is Canadian, and may
operate as GPS location satellite, in addition to broadcasting WAAS
corrections for other satellites.

http://www.gpsinformation.net/exe/waas.html has some explanations, and a
set of links to lyngsat, where you can click your location on a map, and
get the az/el to the satellite. The angle might surprise you.
#35 would be at 209az.

From San Francisco, you should be able to see 4 WAAS satellites.

There are only two slots for WAAS, to the right side of the satellite page.
If there are two good strength bars, they don't seem to change. If there
is one good one, the other will cycle through some others. If none are
found, a normal GPS satellite might take that slot on the display.

In Atlanta I get a solid bar on #51 -for whatever that's
worth... Seems like #48 ALSO should go solid, but don't
know...

Thanks Jack,

I'm near San Francisco, so it looks like I'm in the range of 35 and
48. 35 will go solid, but not 48. I waited a bit to make sure. If I
recall previous discussions, it has something to do with testing and
ranging information (whatever that means) not being sent, but perhaps
those in the know can confirm or deny this.

Both 48 and 51 are in periodic modes of testing. Below is the link
that shows what's being tested and on which days for both 48 and 51:

48 is hollow because it is in test mode. It is still giving corrections. You should also get 51 which is real strong also. I'm so glad they finally came out with this because I know some owners felt left out. Now your unit is a good as new again!

Thanks John. I had thought the MAP76 model was on the "orphan" list
and I'm glad they did offer the upgrade.

I guess it's 2 WAAS channels for this unit and out here it's 35 and
48. For some oddball reason it doesn't register 51...but might be that
my local WAAS birds (35 and 4Cool have the strongest signal.

If you have two good WAAS satellites, the 60cs doesn't seem to try to find
any alternatives. If you delberately did a satellite search where you have
no southern view, you might get some cycling of other WAAS numbers.
