Sell the overpriced BMW system on eBay and get yourself a better and
less expensive aftermarket unit with more reasonably-priced annual map
upgrades. Or skip a year or two between upgrades - the changes from
one year to the next are usually fairly small.

Buy a road map for $5, it's amazing how efficient they are!

Ordered the new CDs, will wait a few years as suggested before the next set
(my current CD is more than 5 years old). I'm sure the aftermarket units
have tons more features (I can't even do waypoints and other basic stuff),
but I want to use that cool screen that came with the car...

thanks for the advice.

The smart-a$$ answers are out in force.

I wait a few years in-between on mine. It's not a BMW issue like some
would think. Navteq has us by the jewels.

I'm with you on the screen. Doesn't make any sense to choose a 3.5"
after-market over my 9" in-dash nav screen.

Plus it is tied into all the other systems (mutes the stereo for
directions, updates the ETA on the computer, etc).

I was hoping to downlaod every other year or so from somewhere and pay them
$$ the other years to keep them in business. Didn't see the .ISO images
anywhere though.

Oh, well - guess like other things with these types of cars, just give 'em
the $$$.
