Hi, all!
Does anyone have any recommendations for a reflecting telescope?
The telescope must:
1) Have good optics.
2) Be rugged / portable.
3) ... and CHEAP!!!
Any suggestions? |

And then forget the word Cheap. Look for a "Good" telescope not some pile of
junk from the department stores. I'd look at Stargazer Steve Dobs.

Rod,
That scope looks like it was made for little people. I know you can
probably build a platform to get it up off the ground, but still may
be more trouble than it's worth.
I read somewhere that you actually tried this scope out. How was the
height? Was it on a table when you used it?

I just bought a Nexstar 5 on e-bay for $400. I know I am taking something
of a risk with it. I want to use it as a grab & go scope.

Check Astromart for used equipment first, and often.
"Cheap" means Hardin Optical, Orion, Antares (to name a few of Asian origin)
Specific recommendations:
6" F8 Dob
8" F6 Dob
6" F5 EQ3
An 8" F6 Dob is considered by many the ideal starter scope.

This is a remarkable little scope for the $$, and if you don't want to
build a "Starblast stand" as I did, they have the same tube available
on a small GEM mount with an adult-sized tripod. ;-)

ahhh yes. That's the article I remember reading a while back. It
might be a good idea to include that link in your post whenever you
recommend that scope. :-)

That's a lot of feedback. Thanks guys.
That 4.5" Orion StarBlast looks pretty cool and is within my price
range. I am not as hard-core as most people here, yet. I will check
out the FAQ guide and have a second look at "Stargazer" Steve Dodson's
site. I remember checking the Stargazer Steve site a long while ago
but I didn't quite like what I found.

I own one of Stargazer Steve's Dobs and it's a fine telescope.
Plus he's gone into truss scopes too now.

The Starblast is a great choice. So is Orion's 6" dob. Not as cheap
or as portable, but much greater light-gathering power. There are
lots of brands to stay away from, but Orion is great.
