Musharraf leaves for Middle East today
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf will leave on Saturday
for a
four-day visit to five Arab countries.
The president will meet King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Egyptian
President Hosni
Mubarak, King Abdullah of Jordan and President Bashar Al-Assad of
Syria,
according to the Foreign Office. He will also visit the UAE.
The Middle East situation continued to be a source of deep global
concern, he
said, especially for the Islamic world and Pakistan. "The situation
in Palestine
has aggravated, Lebanon remains in crisis following the Israeli
invasion and
withdrawal, Iraq is mired in increasing violence and there are other
new and
ominous dangers looming on the horizon. There is great need for harmony
within
the Muslim world and unity to address the dangers it faces."
The Foreign Office said this grave situation had been on the top of the
agenda
during discussions with visiting dignitaries from Islamic countries and
during the
president and the prime minister's visits to Middle East capitals.
"During these
meetings, it was often suggested that as an important Islamic country
Pakistan
should make its contribution to help peace efforts in the Middle East.
The
president has also engaged leaders from the West to emphasise urgency
and the
imperative need for addressing the Palestinian issue and the Middle
East
situation to avert an explosive situation endangering global peace."
It said Pakistan always supported the Palestinian cause, forcefully
advocating
implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions, Israeli
withdrawal
to the 1967 borders and the establishment of an independent Palestinian
State
with Al Quds as its capital, living side by side with Israel in
security and
peace.
"We welcomed the Beirut initiative of 2002 and emphasised the need
for
implementation of the Quartet road map. Pakistan has upheld this
principled
position at every international forum. We are deeply concerned to see
that the peace efforts in the
region have remained stalled while the situation continues to
deteriorate."
It said there was dissension within the Palestinian leadership. "New
dangerous
divisions have appeared within the Middle East owing to the grave
conflicts in
Iraq while the Israeli aggression against Lebanon has left the country
in
turmoil. The president has shared deep concern over this situation with
every
leader from the Muslim world he has met."
The Foreign Office said all these leaders agreed on the urgent need for
fresh
efforts involving Arab and influential Muslim countries for peace and
conflict
resolution in the Middle East. "There is also the common perception
that
Palestine issue continues to be at the heart of tension and conflict in
the
region, which calls for a strong political and diplomatic initiative on
the part
of the Muslim countries."
- telephones Iranian president
ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf on Friday spoke to
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over the telephone, and told him
about
his upcoming visit aimed at exchanging views with leaders of Saudi
Arabia,
Egypt, Syria and Jordan. The Foreign Office said the president
expressed concern
over the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, and stressed the
need for
fresh efforts to push for a just settlement of the Palestinian issue.
President
Ahmadinejad thanked the president for sharing his views and welcomed
the
president's initiative for addressing the Palestinian issue. "The
Iranian
president supported the president's efforts. The two leaders have
agreed to keep
in contact with each other," the Foreign Office said. staff report
