As I can't afford dental care, and felt the need to see a dentist, I
went to a Dental school in New York. They took a "Panoramiic" view and
shocked me by saying I had a lot of decay and needed 18 fillings!!!!! I
am a 24 year old college student, and brush 2 times a day, and floss
every nite...but have not seen a dentist for 2 years. I don't know what
to believe...but to seek a second opinion would cost $$$ that I can't
afford. I have a very tigh budget. Can anyone tell me if i can trust the
dental school opinion? Thanks in advance. e-mail welcome.

Generally speaking, dental schools have to teach quite literally "by
the book" and as a former faculty member at NYU I can say that we didn't
have students drill teeth that didn't need drilling.
The only problem I have with your scenario is that panoramic films (and
other extraoral films) are usually quite poor diagnostically for decay,
so they should be supplemented AT LEAST with bitewing films.
