Do any of you use the Babylon dictionary/translation application?
http://tinyurl.com/2an2kn
I downloaded their free trial application and it works wonderfully, but my
windows started crashing once in a while- the problem occurs
mainly when I have many windows open at once and try to
call up the application (ctrl+right click) to translate a fragment of text.
The problem could be a little outdated computer will low memory I have here
therefore it would be great if any of you have installed this application
and
could provide any feedback, if you had any similar problems on a more
'modern machine', before I go out and purchase a new machine as well
as the full version of Babylon.

You should have given the full link, instead of only the TinyURL
version.
That link leads to a page at commission-junction.com. That site is
blocked by my HOSTS file, based on a recommendation a long time ago.
Everything that I can find on the web about Commission-junction.com,
tells me that their mission is not to provide useful software to you,
it is to provide advertising to their clients.

I suspect that your system has been infected by spyware. They
probably don't mean to harm you, or to take anything from you
personally. They only mean to gather information about your browsing
habits, accumulate this information with information about many other
web users, and sell the results.
Still, there are marketing web sites which install programs on your
computer, that can cause the symptoms you describe.
My recommendation is to visit a reputable anti-spyware site and run a
free scan. Suggestions:
If you use Windows XP, use Windows Defender (free)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Other highly regarded free programs:
http://www.safer-networking.org/ - Spyware Search & Destroy
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5 - AVG Anti-Spyware
Here are other recommendations for low-cost anti-spyware programs.
http://anti-spyware-review.toptenreviews.com/
http://www.webroot.com/ - SpySweeper - free trial (I have owned the
pay version -- definitely worth it)

You don't mention details about your hardware and software platform, so
evalutions
are difficult. A crude but potentially useful approach is to compare
the operation of a
program of similar functional complexity and number of open windows
which ran on your system before installation of the Babylon
application.

Steve's suggestion is not only a good idea in this particular instance
but it is a generic
prescription for the health of your system. Spybot sd and Ad-aware are
freeware anti-spyware programs operable on older machines. You can get
categorized evaluations and virus-free downloads of these and other
offerings at cnet.com.

Hi
I had same problems in the past with Babylon
Recommendations about spy/adware precautions I agree is something
general you have to look at. Probably you did already.
However I think you are having problems related to the hardware and
actual Windows' version
The shortcut [Key] + button involves a number of Windows' apps, so the
entire system is playing a role when you do that, check this by
searching manually entering the words into Babylon's text box to see
what happens. Most probably will not hang
In case you are behind a firewall, please also note Babylon tries to
connect to its site all the time, looking for updates and further
recommendations, so the firewall could be stopping it from that,
waiting for your response, you can uncheck that by entering the options
menu.
At any rate, if you have several programs running at the same time,
each one of them will contribute to your system load work, so an
update, if possible, is recommended
In my case, I got a new computer 60 days ago, 2GB memory, and all
problems are gone, of course, this comfort will not last, as usually
:-)

that's how I originally got the link from someone, but since it broken-up
into two pieces when I received it and had to manually put it together
in the web browser I used tiny-url so it does not brake up.
I have seemed to resolve the problem by throwing in another DIMM of
memory and it works fine, the translations provided are quite good
- at least in regards English/Polish, however I noticed one nuisance,
the program opens up popups/popunders ! Does anyone know if the
paid version does that also or is that just a 'extra feature' of the demo? |
