Hi All
Can anyone assist with a short message expressing condolences to a
female Italian friend on the death of her grandfather at 98? I don't
really want to trust googletranslate on such a sensitive matter ;-(

It will probably come too late, but I'll try to help anyway ... Actually
, I find it difficult to find the right words for these occasions,
even in my mothertounge, but I can try.
You could say:
Carissima (name of friend),
Ho saputo della scomparsa di tuo nonno e mi dispiace moltissimo. Ti sono
vicino nel tuo dolore.
Le pił sentite condoglianze a tutta la tua famiglia
(I'll translate roughly,
Dear...
I am extremely sorry to hear that your grandpa passed away. I am close
to you in your sorrow.
with deepest sympathy for all your family

Thank you; I've taken part of that and put it on a nice photo of some
lilies and emailed it
