Hi
Brought my car from the US to Europa. It has a built in GPS but I can
not get maps or device updates for Europa. Neither the device and car
manufacturer help.
(Its a Alpine device in a Chrysler 300/2005)
Any hint where to go next?

Some discussion here:
http://www.300cforums.com/forums/car-audio-alarms-navigation/3841-navigation-europe.html
Essentially, the advice is to buy the European kit for an absurdly high price
and sell the US kit on eBay.
US cars -- great, innit? |

Marc
the car IS great but I never thought a device that can be controlled by
software is not adaptable to a location change???
Anyway, thanks for the link

When the bean counters get involved, devices are designed _specifically_ to
limit the control of the owner. Think -- region codes on DVDs; DRM locks which
prevent fair use; voting machine software which legally may not be examined by
the State, a certain cellphone-cum-music player whith a 100-song limit no matter
how much memory is installed; & cetera, & cetera, & cetera.
I'm sure you can get it to work, but you'll have to hack the firmware.
Otherwise pay through the nose, you, you, valued customer, you.
Not that Chrysler, Alpine, or any other car or satnav company is inherently
evil. They exist to maximize profits, not to produce brilliant cars or
brilliant electronics. Localized products seem to maximize profits, even if it
upsets the few non-localized customers out there. |

It goes further than that. ABC car company commissions XYZ SatNav company
to produce name-brand unit that fits neatly into their model W car, at a price
of N dollars per unit.
That's as far as they care.
If you want to travel to another country, all bets are off.
Hell, if you want to travel offroad in your OWN country, all bets are off.
Want to travel to that town in the middle of the country? No guarantees
you'll see any more than just the main road.
They don't even care about road rule legalities. Here in New South Wales,
Australia, it was ALWAYS illegal to perform a U-Turn at ANY intersection.
Though, it doesn't stop said built-in SatNavs from _recommending_ a "normal"
U-Turn whenever you make a wrong turn at a route.
None of this "turn around where safe, then proceed..." bullshit, let's leave
the responsible driving to the driver, they are locals after all, so they
should know.
If you're an out-of-towner with a hire car? Tough titties.
It goes beyond buyer beware, I would recommend that anyone stay completely
away from built-in satnavs, and go for a PDA/GPS/Software solution and do your
homework to see if the software vendor covers the areas/country you want to visit.
You have lots of choices now, even here in Australia.
End rant. Thanks for listening.

Your map database is either Navteq or TeleAtlas. If you're lucky, it's
TeleAtlas. They have the best European coverage. Check the system DVD
and you should be able to see the copyright and know who's database it
is.

Tele Atlas does have fantastic coverage in Europe AND elsewhere. Just
today, they announced that they are expanding coverage to Saudi Arabia
and Egypt which now puts their coverage at 64 countries which is
great. They are really ponying up to become the industry leader IMO. |

The Chrysler has Navtec software. A friend of mine found a freak on
this stuff but the merging would require 2 replacement chips that are
not available on the market - Marc in this thread said it all - if
nobody would be there to be pissed at - what would some of our human
community be busy with?? |
