Gunner,

Try to find a Miller Maxstar 140. I don't think they make 'em
anymore. Mine has emerged as my favorite machine. However, although
it will technically work on 115v it doesn't weld so hot.

However, give it 20 amps of 230v and it welds like the dickens. Crank
it up to just below full tilt and it burns 1/8" 7018 quite
beauteously.

Vernon..thanks for the thought..but 230vts is not an option. Im up to my

ass in 230 machines at the moment. Nor do I have the space in the back
of the Ranger for a Dialarc 250 <G> or the Heliwelder V squarewave
Tig/stick that Im putting together

I really need a 110vt box. Shrug

But Gunner,

What I'm trying to tell you gently is THEY DON'T WELD WORTH A TINKER'S
DAMN ON 110 VOLTS! OK??

I want you to be happy. So, I am telling you this for your on good.

So be happy. Buy a Maxstar 140 and suffer through 110 volts when you
have to and give it what it really wants when you can. 220.

Peace.

Gunner,

You are aware (aren't you?) that the Miller inverter machines can be
plugged, willy nilly, into 115 or 230v circuits? The machine senses
the difference. I seem to recall that the newer ones will even
differentiate between single and 3 phase current. But I'm not sure
about that. So YOU plug it in and get back to me. If there's
anything left...

I'm too math challenged to do the math like Igor suggested. But I can
confirm his conclusion. 110v doesn't have enough oomph to produce a
decent arc. At least not on the Maxstar 140.

I appreciate it..but I simply dont have the room in the back of the
truck.

Im an independant machine tool repair guy. I already have 500lbs minimum
of Stuff in the back of the truck..an elderly Mazda/Ranger pickup with
422,000 miles on it. I have 4 tool boxes, 2 large caddy boxes, conduit
benders in racks to the right, crowbars and lifting gear to the left,
bins on a shelf behind the rear window, a box with a Greenlee hydraulic
slug buster for making holes in electrical cabinets and an 10 ton
hydraulic portapower and rams in a large case. Not to mention the spare
monochrome computer monitor, various extension cords, parts bins and a
half dozen 2 liter Diet Mt Dews (at the start of the week) Oh..and the
Lincoln Weldpak 100.

I cant put anything much bigger than a lunch box in there. Shrug
While the Maxstar itself is small enough..putting it in a protective
case is gonna make it a fair amount bigger

Not to mention unless I can swap/trade for a Maxstar 140..buying one
simply aint in the cards. Even on Ebay..the new ones are $700 and used
inverter machines...cringe..

Got one you want to swap? Ill buy a shoehorn and see if I can get one
in there. Maybe I can take out the tool box with the metric box
wrenches, going up to 75mm. I havnt worked on a lot of metric shears in
the last 6 months so they could come out.

But I do appreciate the suggestions.

Ayup. Though on a lark, this afternoon, I used the old Marguette buzzbox

to weld some 3/8 plate together. Butt and fillet welds with 6011 3/32"
rod.

Got full penetration of the root pass with only a small bevel. Damned
hard to keep that short of an arc though..thank Crom Ive been tigging a
while.
