Yesterday, I did some finish welding on a fence project. I welded on some
latches and tabs, and then changed two Bommer springs on my pool gates.

I haven't welded with this Lincoln 175SP+ for a while and forgot I had put
..023 wire in it. I usually always have .030 in it.

Well, obviously, it wouldn't work well at the normal .030 settings. So, I
opens the door, notice I have .023 on it, look it up on the chart on the
door. The settings were waaaaaaaaaay off what I would have set it on if I
had been guessing. I was going to try by guess, but these were the final
visible welds, and I wanted them to look pretty.

When in doubt, there's nothing like RdingTFM, or just going by the chart.
It's just that now, there seems so much to know and to learn and to remember
that stuff gets pushed out of the brain to put new stuff in, and every once
in a while you have to pull out the .......... accckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
........................ DIRECTIONS.

Or- "If it sounds like cookin' bacon, It's a weld your makin." To quote
the old fart who taught me how to MIG as a kid. Or just watch 5 minutes of
the Discovery Channel and your a instant pro! (Ha!) I have a manual that
came with the new pulser I blew up in my AeroWave.. Funny thing is I never
opened it. It's right on top of the welder waiting for me to fry this one
too..... Guilty too. I think I'm gonna grab it now..

Apparently, the convention here is to top-post. OK. :-)

"When all else fails, read the instructions." This has been
SOP in electronics since I was in tech school. Wink
(you know, back when the snow was 14 feet deep, and we had
to walk 30 miles uphill both ways...) ;-)

Cheers!

Yup. Other day I was aligning the pinch rolls on my Millermatic, so I cut
off
the wire inside and pulled out the rest through the gun. Then I monkeyed
with
the alignment and then put the wire back in the pinch rollers and barely
into
the gun and pulled the trigger. Not wanting to wait, I clicked it from low
speed
to high.

Two or three days later, I had to weld again. I set it to the settings for
.120" wall tube (which I have memorized) pulled the trigger, and POW it
melted right
through. I thought "Hmm" and tried again, this time really paying
attention. I
managed to get a bead run but it really welded weird.

You guessed it - I'd forgotten to click it back to low setting!

GWE

I wish I had a quarter for every time I've done that in one variation or
another.

Doh!

When I worked as a retail store manager (RadioShack) my employees and
customers often heard me say. "...and when all else fails RTFM" To be cute
my bride hid the assembly manual for an entertainment center to see if I
could do it without one. I will confess it likely took a bit longer but I
got it done with only a few extra pieces.

I also used to label parts as "NFG" when I sent them to my repair tech.
After the 3rd or 4th part so labeled he finally called and asked what it
meant.
