I'm working on a personal project where I need to do
some 0.072 thick aluminum welding.
I have a niceThermal Arc Inverter welder, and I am resonably competent
with stainless and steel.
I'm just not having much success in Aluminum.
I would gladly pay a competent aluminum welder to give me some
instruction.
I'm in Solana Beach area just north of San Diego and I would gladly
pay someone $50. an hour cash if they could come by my place after
work or on the weekend and offer some tips.

I will be in Anahiem for 3 weeks this spring for NDT training.
I don't know how far that is from San Diego, but I will be free on
weekends |

Its about 80 miles.
Id love to take a weekend class from you, and could probably get the use
of a shop and facilities from one of my clients.
Paul could come up easily enough, and Id happily stay down in SO. Cal
over a weekend or two, for this.
How many people do you need, to make it worth while having a class?
What would your rates be?

dont knock yourself. practice on some scrap AL. you'll need to try different
tungstens, flow rates, cup sizes, etc. preping the AL is critical. that thin
i suspect you'll need AL wire as opposed to filler rods, etc.

4 to 5 is a good starting number.
At most 8.
More than that makes it hard to show details.
I have usually done TIG classes in 2 parts.
The first is a lot of info, and the second is demonstrations.
As to cost, it would depend on how many hours.
$40 a piece for a 6 hour class is what I have been charging for the
seattle seminars.
I can even bring copies of the TIG handbook that I made for South
Seattle Comm Coll.
My boss is figuring out when they can be without me for 2 weeks for
Ultrasound and 1 week for Mag Particle.
So I will either be down there for 3 weeks straight or 2 weeks and 1
week.
I will be training at Hellier.
This cam up because one of our senior instructors quit to go back to the
dive industry, and that left us short handed for NDT training.
We like to have at least 3 instructors on campus who can teach each
section of the program.
Currently I am the only instructor who teaches only one thing. |

Sure.
I planned on being down there earlier, but it has been difficult to get
away with so much construction going on on campus. |

This is a two parter.....
Part I A Question for Ernie,
You have seminars/classes in the Seattle area?
When are these?
How long do they last?
What equipment do you use?
Part II Some basic questions...
1)Everyone says that aluminum preperation is important?
What does this consist of?
All I've been doing is removeing obvious dirt and wiping down with
acetone?
2)Is there any down side to having the argon flow very high other than
the economic one of cost?
3)Is it possible to stick the tungston and not have to clean/grind it?
Is this true for even the most minor "brush" with the surface?
4)The Thermal Arc 185 Inverter has more settings than
the airplane I usually fly. I think that most of these are for
automated production work, and not really applicable to lift start
tig. Am I wrong?
If I'm wrong what setup would you start with?

grant Erwin has been organizing them, and so far it has been about every
6 months.
Last Winter we did Gas welding/Cutting.
Last Summer we did everything Wire Feed,
This winter the vote seems to be for a TIG seminar, but that is tougher
logistically because of equipment .
I have free use of the shop at the Divers School, but currently there
isn't a breaker wired in big enough to handle my Syncrowave 250DX, so I
will have to see about that.
I have 400 amps of 208 v 3ph in the panel, so there is lots of power
available, but I am not allowed to wire anything into the panel.
It all has to be done by a professional electrician.
So in theory I will be running a TIG seminar in Seattle in a month or 2.

A lot depends on how good your machine is.
A new Miller or Lincoln TIG will pretty much ignore most oxidation and
schmutz, but an older machine might have trouble burning through it.
It has to do with how happy your high frequency transformer is.
They age faster than the main transformer and you have to clean and
regap your points every few years.
A happy high freq unit makes a huge difference on AC aluminum.
I don't usually do anything to new aluminum, other than remove any
obvious crud.
If it is a bit oxidized from sitting outside then maybe a bit of a rub
down with some scotchbrite.
If the oxidation/crud is really heavy then a scrubbing with a small
stainless steel brush.
Quote: 2)Is there any down side to having the argon flow very high other than
the economic one of cost?
Yes.
Too high of a flow causes turbulence which can suck air into your shield
zone.
Standard collet bodies require 15 to 25 cfh.
Gas Lens collet bodies require 8 to 15 cfh.
Quote: 3)Is it possible to stick the tungston and not have to clean/grind it?
Only on certain metals like Magnesium and bronze, where the metals don't
react to the tungsten and screw up teh arc.
Aluminum, Steel and Stainless steel will all try to alloy with the
tungsten, causing it to disintegrate.
Quote: Is this true for even the most minor "brush" with the surface?
It depends.
If I only lightly contaminate a tungsten with aluminum I will try
washing the arc over a clean block of copper or aluminum and see if I
can burn it off.
With Steel and stainless I just keep going until the arc becomes
unusable.

Paul
Interestingly with the Thermal Arc 185 you can't even access most of the
settings without a different controller.
You can use the pulser with the foot pedal, but the sequencer requires a
pendant controller that velcros to your torch.
You have to read the fine print in the manual to find this out.
Several of my students bought that machine on my recommendation, and one
brought his in for me to play with.
For the pulser start with 1.5 pulses per second, 50 % On time, and 50 %
background. |

Ill need about 3 weeks prior notice though to get the wheels in motion

I love aluminum TIG. I don't know why people have a problem with it.
Take a look at the www.valleymetal.org website and you'll see the
classes I have assisted with the TIG portion. (I also do MIG and stick
and just started playing with a plasma cutter.)
I go to San Diego 5 - 7 times a year to go sailing at the Marriott
downtown.
Let me know.
