4 die in accidents on snowy roadways
By Heather Ratcliffe And Aisha Sultan
Post-Dispatch
12/14/2003

Steady snowfall and slick spots on roads led to three deaths in the St.
Louis area Saturday and may have contributed to another accident that killed
a man, authorities reported.

In Illinois, a man and woman were killed on Interstate 70 near Highland when
their pickup slid across the median and hit a tractor-trailer head-on about
4 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The couple, who were traveling westbound, were not from the St. Louis area.
Police declined to identify the victims until they could notify relatives.

Meanwhile, a Fenton man died and a St. Louis man was injured in Jefferson
County when the driver lost control of his Jeep about 1 p.m. Saturday on
White Oak School Road east of Highway W, authorities said.

Jeffrey T. Helfrich, 22, of Fenton, was driving east when he ran off the
right side of the road and the vehicle overturned. He was taken to St.
Anthony's Medical Center in south St. Louis County where he was pronounced
dead.

His passenger, Robert K. Nowak, 20, of St. Louis, was treated and released.
Police said both men were wearing seat belts. The Missouri Highway Patrol
said the snow may have been a factor.

Earlier, a man was killed in Franklin County when he lost control of his car
in the snow on Highway 30 near Highway HH.

Michael Romine, 39, of Lonedell, in Franklin County, was driving eastbound
about 9 a.m. when his 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass spun into a utility pole. He
was taken to St. Anthony's Medical Center in south St. Louis County, where
he died.

Across the region, police said that the slippery roads Saturday kept
officers busy with dozens of other accidents, serious and minor.

A woman was taken to a hospital with minor injuries about 1:30 p.m. after
she drove into the back of a St. Louis police car on Interstate 55 near
Germania Street. The officer driving the car was outside his vehicle
attending to another accident and was not injured.

"People need to slow down," said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. M.
Hartmann. "They're driving like it's summertime out there, and they can't do
that."

Butch Dye, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in St. Louis, said
1.9 inches of snow had accumulated at Lambert Field by 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Weather Service said the snow generally had ended in Missouri by
Saturday evening. Sunday should be cloudy and cold with highs in the low
30s. The high temperature Monday was predicted to be in the upper 40s.

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation began treating roads
with salt Friday and had 225 trucks out clearing snow and applying salt
Saturday, a spokeswoman said.

In Illinois, crews expected to have the roads completely clear by midnight,
said Tim Padgett, spokesman for the Department of Transportation.

Many area residents stocked up on snow shovels, salt and sandbags to deal
with the first real snowfall of the season. The Home Depot in Town and
Country ordered another truckload of salt and sandbags as the store came
close to selling out Saturday, manager James Austin said.

The burst of winter weather may have brought home the holiday spirit for
some. Austin said the store's hottest sellers were snow shovels and
Christmas trees.

No, he's saying that it's winter and people die in accidents

all the time. I won't bother adding the last word as it's implied.

I believe winter hasn't officially begun yet.

Actually, a massive government program could easily fix it. But the
program wouldn't be as massive as the massive government program needed to
create the global plutonium economy that many right wingers advocate.

Warmer cold air = Higher moisture content = more snow.

But then again, currently it's raining in the U.S. North East.

Snicker. What happened to that snow?

LOL. It's currently -15C where I live. Winter, you know the

COLD season between fall and spring, has definitely arrived here. BTW,
there are better definitions for winter than merely the season between
the winter solstice and vernal equinox. You should explore some of
them.

Oh I know that. The remark was meant to show the hair splitting that goes on
here when posts don't meet some people's criteria.
