Surely 56% efficeincy of solar cells must be a mistake . Even Mother
Nature is not that good !
US scientists claim making 'efficient' solar cells
Washington, Nov 10. (PTI): Scientists have discovered a way of making
efficient solar cells by boosting their ability to convert light
energy into electricity, a development that could be of immense
importance to countries like India.
The discovery could make solar energy competitive not only against
thermal power but even against hydropower, K M Yu of Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory in California and his colleagues from other
universities said in the Journal of Physical Review.
Yu and his colleagues have created a zinc-manganese-tellurium crystal
- "salted" with oxygen atoms - that offers three "band gaps" - the
jump in energy states an electron must make to flow freely - in a
single material which allows conversion of incoming light energy into
electricity from 33 per cent to 56 per cent.
Together, the gaps "span much of the solar spectrum" and thereby are
able to convert more components of sunlight into electricity, they
said.
Previously, the only way of building multiple band gaps into a solar
cell was to make a sandwich of materials, so-called "multi-junction
cells." This new method creates a multi layer effect in one layer, and
with a higher overall energy efficiency.
Why not make it a law that all kids should have solar pv panel
sown into the back . This would charge during the day and give off a
ghostly green glow at night . How big a panel for say 3hrs of glow in
the dark evenings of winter? |

Because another annoying, intrusive, busibody law like that would only
oncrease the already rampant disrespect for the Law as an institution?
