All we ( Joe Public ) are trying to do is get some sort of handle and
this "NanoTech business ".
Quote: From my side of the pond it looks OK. The U.S. House of
Representatives approved a substantial amount of cash for the
advancement of Nanotechnology, and the BIG race is on .
This time ( or should I say at this nano point of time ) with Uncle
Sam just taking the lead from us here in Europe..
Then it all starts to go pear shaped ! How are we ( Joe Public ) ever
going to have any faith ( read get value for money ) out of the
advancements in NanoTech if the very issue " NanoTech " is clouded by
" intellectual punch ups ".
Its healthy to disagree, same would argue even democratic, but please
this time do it behind closed doors. This issue is way too big even
for these two learned Gentleman. Drexler-Smalley.
You should both be offering us all comfort not fueling an ever
increasing fear of anything NanoTech, with headline disagreements.
Find your common grounds first, and then offer your stand points ( and
not your opinions ) up for debate.
Sadly, I can visualize it now " Your ideas are wrong sir....totally
and utterly wrong ! "
" A Dual then Sir.... for the honor of Lady called NanoTech "
Agreed "I.Q's at fifty paces..... tomorrow at dawn ! "
What was it now that the late great Douglas Adams wrote... " just as
we thought it was safe to get down from the trees...... "

So far I'm with you on that!

There seems to be some debate on whether the money is really for molecular
manufacturing or for chemistry and biochemistry that have been repackaged
as "nanotechnologies".

Don't sweat it, since the money isn't going to be used for molecular
manufacturing, Europe can spend their money more wisely. But my humble
advise would be to not spend so dang much of it up-front. Nanotechnology
research should not be a capital-intensive effort, IMHO. Brain-intensive,
yes.

I'm not familiar with the term "intellectual punch ups". You mean a bitter
argument?

Such a proposal is contrary to the scientific method, which works best out
in the open.

Actually, this particular argument has been going on for 6 or 7 years that
I know about:
